CHARLOTTETOWN, PEI --- The Saint John Sea Dogs took a 2-1 lead in their best-of-seven playoff series with the P.E.I. Rocket on Tuesday night, skating into the Charlottetown Civic Centre and earning a 3-0 win at the expense of their hosts.

Saint John turned in an exceptional defensive effort in laying claim to victory on Tuesday, holding their opponents to only three dangerous shots on goal while going 5-for-5 on the penalty kill. Between the pipes, overage goaltender Marco Cousineau made 24 saves in picking up the first shutout of his playoff career.

Offensive production for the visitors, meanwhile, came courtesy of forwards Mike Hoffman, Danick Gauthier, and Jonathan Huberdeau. Evan Mosher took the loss in net for P.E.I., surrendering three goals on 30 shots faced.

After both teams came up empty on early-match power play chances, rookie Jonathan Huberdeau gave the visiting squad from south western New Brunswick a 1-0 lead at the 14:33 mark of the first period. The 16-year old winger banked in a shot off of the back of Mosher's leg from behind the Rocket's net to register his second goal of the post-season.

Danick Gauthier doubled the visitors' lead early in the second period, taking a feed from Stephen MacAulay on the fly into P.E.I. territory and ripping a high wrist shot past Mosher's glove hand to tally his first marker of the playoffs.

Superstar sniper Mike Hoffman then put Saint John up by a field goal in the dying seconds of the middle frame, burying a rebound produced by a sharp-angle shot off the stick of a streaking Simon Després to improve his career post-season goals total to 24.

Neither team was able to find the back of the net over the course of an overtly-physical closing twenty minutes of play, with Marco Cousineau adding a dozen saves to his nightly total en route to earning the road shutout.

These two teams will renew acquaintances at the Charlottetown Civic Centre on Wednesday night at 7pm in Game 4 of their first round playoff tilt. The fifth game of the series will be staged at Harbour Station on Friday night at 7:30pm. Tickets to this match can be obtained by calling the arena box office at (506) 657-1234 or by visiting www.tickets.harbourstation.ca.
