Saint John Sea Dogs News Release
SAINT JOHN - The Saint John Sea Dogs had six picks in the first three rounds of the 2013 Quebec Major Junior Hockey League entry draft. One of those picks, the 41st overall choice, Joey Richard, would have to choose a new favourite hockey team.
The native of Dieppe, NB had grown up watching the Moncton Wildcats play in the QMJHL, even receiving some free tickets along the way to see some games. Needless to say, the Richard family has had to convert allegiances.
"Obviously, yeah," laughed Richard. "Growing up and playing since I was in timbits they always gave us tickets and would watch them growing up. I've completely changed since I was drafted by Saint John. I'm turning into a Sea Dogs' fan, and my family too."
Growing up in the area's hockey scene naturally led to a few friendships with players now on the Wildcats roster.
"I got a couple of texts, and a couple Wildcats guys mentioned the Rivalry Cup," said Richard.
Richard is not alone on the Sea Dogs roster as a Moncton-area native. Jeremy Doucet, an 18-year-old d-man acquired from the Acadie-Bathurst Titan the 2012-13 holiday trading period, is from Dieppe as well.
"We trained together this season," said Richard. "He helped me and told me what kind of training to expect with the Sea Dogs. And here, too, he's helped me get into it the first few days."
It was a good day for Richard on the 8th of June, when he heard his name called by the Sea Dogs.
"I was really nervous," Richard said. "I wanted to stay in the Maritimes, so when some of the teams were picking that I didn't want, I would be nervous and hope to wait. But when Saint John came up, I wanted to go there for sure. "
His parents also lucked out having their son so close to home, as they are now able to keep up their appearances when Joey plays hockey. He says his parents are his biggest hockey influence, off the ice.
"They put me in hockey when I was young, and to this day they always watch every game I play in."
When asked about his style of play, he emphasized the offensive side of the game.
"I'm more of a goal-scorer," Richard said. "Every time I got the puck I would shoot. I like to play the point on the power-play."
He'll get his chance to be a part the Rivalry Cup atmosphere this weekend, with the Sea Dogs taking on the Wildcats in a home-and-home series. Friday night, the Dogs are in Bouctouche to take on the Cats at 7 p.m., with the Wildcats visiting Saint John Sunday afternoon.
Sunday's action gets underway at 3 p.m. at Harbour Station. Tickets for the contest can be purchased at the Harbour Station box office, online at tickets.harbourstation.ca Fo9APWG2ST] or by calling 657-1234.
