SD Loyal Set for Second Home Match of the Season

June 11, 2021 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
San Diego Loyal News Release

This is the first time these two teams meet in the 2021 season after drawing 1-1 draw in September 2020. It was a match that finished and appeared to be an ordinary draw. It wasn't.

SD Loyal forfeited a Sept. 23, 2020 following news that a racial slur was directed at SD Loyal's Elijah Martin. The decision helped LA Galaxy II earn a spot in the post season after finishing second in the group standings. It reached the Western Conference quarterfinals where it lost to Phoenix Rising. SD Loyal went on to miss the playoffs in its inaugural season. Coach Landon Donovan's team is focused on the current season as it tries to continue adding points in the standings against Pacific Division rival.

SD Loyal is coming off a 1-1 draw at Orange County SC, earning back-to-back points atter a draw at Phoenix Rising FC June 5. Donovan said that it has been a good sight to have the team earn points while getting better on the field. SD Loyal has seen a more fluid brand of soccer in its last two matches, earning control of most of the matches but ultimately allowing the tying goals after holding leads for the majority of the minutes.

"This is a process," Donovan said. "We have said all along this is a process. Our effort has been very good and our guys have battled very hard in every match."

Saturday's match is the first for LA Galaxy II since May 29 as its match against Charleston Battery June 4 was rescheduled for October.

LA Galaxy II is off to a fast start to the 2021 USL Championship season, earning 11 points in five matches. It comes into Saturday's match as the second-place team in the Pacific Division standings. LA Galaxy II, also known as "Los Dos," is coming off a 4-3 win against Orange County SC. Los Dos came into the season having shown consistency after clinching a playoff berth for two-consecutive seasons.

Los Dos is led by a handful of key players, including 18-year-old Mauro Cuevas. The full back posted impressive numbers on the back line, and while Los Dos' defense wasn't always reliable, it did also feature other notable youngsters such as Jalen Neal - now signed to a Galaxy First Team contract this past offseason. Augustine Williams is another standout player. He is coming off a season in which he had a career-best 13 goals to take Championship All-League First Team honors. He was also called to the Sierra Leone National Team this offseason. Los Dos also has Alcala and Miguel Avalos both in Mexico's Youth National Team program.
