June 24, 2023 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
San Diego Loyal News Release
PITTSBURGH, Pa. - San Diego Loyal SC began a four-week road stretch with a 2-1 loss at Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC Saturday from Highmark Stadium. Adrien Perez scored in the first half for the visitors but Tola Showunmi and Abdull Osumanu found the net in the second half to complete the comeback for the homeside in the interconference USL Championship match.
SD Loyal (6W-5L-5D, 23 points) appeared to be heading towards another point in the Western Conference standings with a fourth-straight draw but Pitttsburgh fought to the end, finding a late goal to earn the victory. The visitors allowed the pair of second-half goals with Osumanu heading in the game winner a minute into stoppage time off a set piece by Burke Fahling.
Pittsburgh's Showunmi tied the match in the 69th minute after Marc Ybarra found him wide open behind the SD Loyal defense near the six-yard box. Shownumi tapped in Ybarra's pass with his heel to even the scoreline at 1-1.
Head Coach Nate Miller's team had taken a 1-0 lead in the 42nd minute when Perez blasted a left-footed shot from 25-yards out. The midfielder took a pass from Camden Riley up the right flank, dribbled to the middle of the field through defenders, then fired a shot that zipped through the hands of Pittsburgh goalkeeper Luis Zamudio and into the net.
It was SD Loyal's first time facing Pittsburgh (8W-2L-6D, 30 points), a team that is unbeaten in its last 11 home matches going back to last season. With the win, Pittsburgh moves to 9W-0L-1D at home in 2023.
SD Loyal will continue vying for points on the road as it now heads into its second of four-straight road matches at Indy Eleven next Saturday, July 1 (4:30 p.m. PT). The lengthy road stretch continues at Hartford Athletic (July 8) before wrapping up at Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC (July 14). Miller's team returns home Sunday, July 30 (3 p.m.) to host Colorado Springs. Tickets to that match are available now at sdloyal.com/tickets.
