Hartford Fall 2-0 to Indy Eleven
June 24, 2023 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Hartford Athletic News Release
After a well-played first half from Hartford Athletic, they were beat by two second half goals from Indy Eleven.
Hartford Athletic controlled the pace of tonight's match in the first half of play, owning the advantage in possession (53.9% to 46.1%), final third entries (35 to 16), touches in the box (nine to two) and overall scoring chances. They took six shots, four of them from inside Indy's box, doing well to force the visitors to defend deep in their third early on. Elvis Amoh had Hartford's first chance, taking a shot that went just wide to the left of the net in the 10th minute. Luke Merrill and Edgardo Rito connected in the midfield to get Hartford going forward in the 15th minute, leading to a shot from Andre Lewis. Amoh was involved again in the 38th minute on Hartford's best chance of the half. The Ghanaian striker was left alone with just Yannik Oettl to beat after a turnover in their third, but the Indy keeper sprawled off his line to make a quality save and kept Hartford off the scoreboard. The Green and Blue defended excellently in the half, holding Indy to just one shot and two touches in their box. The game stayed scoreless as both teams took to the locker room.
Hartford continued to knock on Indy's door at the start of the second half, forcing two acrobatic saves from Oettl in the opening minutes. Prince Saydee found Andre Lewis just in front of the six yard box in the 50th minute, who turned and rattled a shot off the charging Oettl. Still on the attack a minute later, Edgardo Rito took a shot that was deflected and forced a left-footed save by Oettl.
Despite having just three shots to Hartford's 12 at the 73rd minute mark, it was Indy who struck first at that time. Younes Boudadi played a ball from Hartford's end line to Cam Lindley, who fired a powerful strike from well outside the box that went in. A brilliant shot from Lindley, it hit the left post and fell into the net to beat the diving Sánchez.
Hartford began on the comeback trail, but couldn't find the back of the net. Prince Saydee and second half substitute Kyle Edwards had their only shots the rest of the way, both off target. Douglas Martínez tallied a late goal for Indy in the fifth minute of stoppage time, making the final 2-0.
Yannik Oettl played a major factor for Indy, totaling three saves and rejecting several Hartford crosses out of the box. Hartford totaled eight chances created and put three shots on target. Athletic hit the road to face Loudoun on Monday, July 3rd.
