Mahoning Valley Scrappers News Release
The Mahoning Valley Scrappers (5-12) suffered their first season series sweep of the season in a 6-3 loss to the Aberdeen IronBirds (9-9) at Eastwood Field on Monday night.
Shao-Ching Chiang was stellar in his five innings. He only gave up one hit, and struck out four batters.
The Scrappers scored their first run in the bottom of the second on a sacrifice fly by Jack Goihl to score Li-Jen Chu. Jose Zapata came in for the top of the sixth and had a 1-2-3 inning. The top of the seventh was much different.
Aberdeen combined to score five runs on five hits against Zapata and Ryan Perez. Devon Stewart came in to face the last batter of the seventh, Steve Laurino, to ground into a fielder's choice. The IronBirds batted around in the top of the seventh.
Mahoning Valley refused to quit. The Scrappers scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh. Willi Castro was hit by a pitch, and it allowed Chu to score. Chu was hit by a pitch to start the inning. Aberdeen's pitcher Tanner Scott hit two batters in his appearance. With the bases loaded, Mark Mathias walked, to score Emmanuel Tapia.
Aberdeen added on another run in the top of the ninth when Orioles' first round draft pick D.J. Stewart hit a solo home run to right for his first professional homer.
Chiang earns a no-decision, while Zapata (1-2) takes the loss. Travis Seabrooke (1-1) earns his first win of the year. Jay Flaa gets his first save of the year.
Mahoning Valley has a day off on Tuesday, which is a travel day to Vermont for three games with the Lake Monsters. First pitch on Wednesday is at 7:05 p.m.
