Scouting for Eagles

Colorado Eagles News Release

To build and preserve a highly competitive hockey team at any level takes a lot of hard work and perseverance. The Colorado Eagles are no different and the 2005 President's Cup Champions are always looking for players that will fit into a plan that V.P./Head Coach Chris Stewart has had since day one. Eagles Assistant Coach Phil Crowe is currently on a 10-day scouting trip where he will evaluate many young players to see if they could fit into the Eagles scheme. Crowe will search for players in the NCAA, college and junior hockey ranks.

"To maintain and continue with success both on and off the ice, scouting is perpetual," according to Stewart.

"I rely heavily on former scouts of mine and keep my ear to the ground for any potential players who are interested in our program. Scouting is a never-ending task it really is the grass roots for a successful program."

There is a lot more to a player than talent when Stewart is scouting someone. Obviously, a successful team must be skillful, but just as importantly players must fit into the team concept. Coach Stewart looks for the hard-working, good people to bring into his locker room because he realizes that team chemistry is just as important as team skill. One aspect of that chemistry is the involvement in the community. The Eagles players reach out to the community whether it is school or business appearances, charity functions and much more. The Eagles are in the community that supports them on a weekly basis and need good character people to exemplify what the Eagles are all about, family entertainment.

Phil Crowe is currently in the process of identifying the players that the Eagles want in their program. Once the scouting is finished, then the daunting task of recruiting the potential star begins. The recruitment of an athlete involves traveling to their homes, talking to their families and in many cases flying prospects in and showing them what Northern Colorado has to offer.

As Phil Crowe scouts talent, the V.P./Head Coach Chris Stewart and his Eagles are coming down the stretch of their third season and in first place in the Central Hockey League. As Eagles General Manager Ralph Backstrom says, "it takes a lot of hard work to get to get to the top, but you have to work harder to stay there." It is clear that the Eagles are working harder than ever to stay on top.
