El Paso Buzzards News Release

Albuquerque, NM – Overwhelmed and undermanned, the El Paso Buzzards faced a swarm of Scorpions it could not handle.

The Buzzards could not overcome four first period goals the Buzzards fell 10-1 to the New Mexico Scorpions Friday night at the Tingley Coliseum. The loss is the Buzzards' seventh straight and now drops to 4-11-1 overall and 1-5-0 on the road.

The lone highlight for the Buzzards came when Buzzards' left winger Derek Reynolds recorded his second goal of the year. It occurred in the first period on a slap shot from the left slot to beat Scorpions' goaltender Luciano Caravaggio at 12:35. Buzzards' defenseman Rhett Dudley collected his sixth assist of the season on Reynolds' goal.

Buzzards' right winger Josh Tymchak had the hit of the night in the second period when he leveled Caravaggio behind the Scorpions zone. A brawl ensued after the hit, leaving Caravaggio dazed on the ice. Caravaggio recovered to stay and finish the game, but Tymchak received a five-minute charging penalty and a ten-minute game misconduct for the hit, reflecting tough El Paso Buzzards hockey.

The Scorpions had five different players score against the Buzzards. Scorpions' winger Chris Richards scored three goals, two on the power play and collected three assists. Scorpions center Mike O'Malley had two goals and two assists, defenseman Arturs Kupaks collected two goals and an assist and winger Peter Bearley had a power play goal and two assists. Caravaggio made 16 saves on 17 shots. The win improves the Scorpions record to 9-6-1.

Before the game head coach Craig Coxe had his second leading scorer, left winger Russ Guzior, out for the second game in a row with a shoulder injury. Coach Coxe said Guzior is day to day on his return. Also out of the lineup was Buzzards' left winger Troy Linna with an undisclosed injury.

The Buzzards were out shot in the game 42-17 and 15-1 in the third period. The Buzzards had difficulties on special teams as well as they were 0 for 3 on the power play and allowed a short handed goal. Matt Carmichael started the game for the Buzzards in goal, but was pulled after allowing three goals in the first period and stopping 12 shots. Josh Baier finished the game, allowing seven goals and making 22 saves in only his fourth professional game.

The Buzzards in two previous games with the Scorpions split the contests, each scoring seven goals apiece.

The Buzzards' next game will be on Saturday against the Odessa Jackalopes at 7 p.m. in the Nest. The Jackalopes won on Friday 4-1 against the San Angelo Saints in San Angelo and are in first place in the Southwest Division. The Buzzards come into the game 3-6-0 on the season at home.
