San Antonio Scorpions News Release

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Tuesday, August 5, 2014) - The San Antonio Scorpions have come to terms with the Carolina RailHawks on a trade that sends midfielder Danny Barrera to Carolina in exchange for forward César Elizondo, President and General Manager Howard Cornfield and Scorpions Head Coach Alen Marcina announced today.

"Elizondo gives us great depth up front and fits perfectly into our style of play," said Cornfield. "It was not easy to part with Danny, but we are always looking to improve the club. The coaching staff unanimously agreed this was a move we should make as we continue our focus on winning the Fall Championship."

Barrera appeared in 13 games this season for San Antonio, his first with the team. He compiled a goal and two assists in nine starts and 830 minutes played. Barrera was signed this past offseason after previously having played with the Atlanta Silverbacks.

Elizondo has appeared in 12 games this season for Carolina - including ten starts - and has three assists in 777 total minutes played. The 5'8", 26-year-old native of Costa Rica has also made 10 appearances for his national team, most recently in 2011.

"We've established our goals, we're looking to build upon the foundation laid in the first half of the year, and we continue refining our game to reach our targets," said Head coach Alen Marcina. "Elizondo is a player with electrifying pace, intelligent field awareness, quality technique, and consistent performances since he joined the NASL. He perfectly fits into our style and system for attractive soccer and we're thrilled to acquire such an exciting talent at this important juncture in the season."

In order to comply with NASL roster rules, Canadian midfielder Shaun Saiko was released from his contract, thus freeing up an international slot for Elizondo. Saiko made six appearances in his first season with the Scorpions, including two starts, and scored a goal in 183 total minutes played. "We wish Shaun all the best as he has been a consummate professional on and off the field for the Scorpions," said Cornfield.

Prior to joining the North American Soccer League with the RailHawks, Elizondo played professionally for Saprissa (Costa Rica), Buriram United (Thailand), Municipal Pérez Zeledón (Costa Rica) and Bayamón FC (Puerto Rico).

The Scorpions play their next match this Saturday, August 9, at 7:30pm at Toyota Field against Indy Eleven. For information on Scorpions tickets call 210-495-8686 or visit sascorpions.com.
