Scorpions Soccer Club Thanks Fans for Supporting Soccer for a Cause
December 22, 2015 - North American Soccer League (NASL)
San Antonio Scorpions News Release
SAN ANTONIO, Texas - Owner Gordon Hartman of the San Antonio Scorpions Football Club today expressed sincere gratitude to fans of the team for making Soccer for a Cause a tremendous success.
His comments came as the sale of Toyota Field and S.T.A.R. Soccer Complex to the City of San Antonio and Bexar County was finalized today. With it comes an agreement for Spurs Sports and Entertainment (SSE) to operate the facilities and field a team that plays in the United Soccer League (USL).
"When we announced the creation of Soccer for a Cause in the summer of 2010 along with our intention to field a professional soccer team in the North American Soccer League (NASL), we had a vision," said Hartman. "Our goal was to field a team that would compete for championships while supporting those with special needs via a unique, unprecedented relationship where all net profits from the Scorpions and S.T.A.R. Soccer Complex were given directly to non-profit Morgan's Wonderland, the world's only fully accessible theme park. With two regular season trophies, an NASL championship in 2014, a beautiful soccer-specific stadium, and over $1,000,000 raised for Morgan's Wonderland to benefit special-needs individuals, I'm proud to say that we've been successful."
The San Antonio Scorpions played their first-ever match on April 7, 2012, on the road against the Atlanta Silverbacks. The following week, San Antonio fans set a then NASL record as 13,151 people packed Heroes Stadium for the team's inaugural home match against the Puerto Rico Islanders. The Scorpions went on to capture the NASL's regular season championship in their expansion year and established another NASL record for margin of victory in an 8-0 win over the Carolina RailHawks. The club opened 8,000 seat Toyota Field on April 13, 2013, against the Tampa Bay Rowdies in front of a packed house of 8,177 fans. The home of the Scorpions was the only privately financed, soccer-specific stadium in the NASL.
San Antonio set more NASL records (for longest road winning streak and fewest goals allowed) in 2014 on their way to capturing the Fall Season Championship. A dramatic Championship Semifinal win over the New York Cosmos earned the Scorpions the right to host the NASL Championship Final. A then modern NASL championship game-record crowd of 7,847 fans cheered the Scorpions on to San Antonio's first-ever professional soccer title.
"I am extremely proud of everything we accomplished in a relatively short amount of time," said Cornfield. "We laid a firm foundation in San Antonio for soccer and proved that it is possible to field a championship-winning team that is profitable and supports important causes. We led the NASL in sponsorship dollars by a significant margin, had a great season ticket base, and fantastic fan support. The Scorpions' legacy will be that of winners on the field and strong supporters of the community off of it. We helped build awareness and raise money for special needs via Soccer for a Cause, raised over $125,000 for breast cancer research through the Maggie's Wish Jersey Auction, made a difference by participating in special events with partners like Camp Discovery, and showed the world that special needs athletes like Michael Kelley are champions, too. We had a great run!"
