New Mexico Scorpions News Release

[RIO RANCHO, N.M.]-The Scorpions helped "Salute the Badges" with a 4-3 win over Austin Saturday night. The win gave the Scorpions points in six straight home games.

After only scoring one goal last night in the entire game, the teams combined for five goals in the opening period alone. New Mexico got out of the gate fast with three quick goals.

Aaron MacInnis backhanded a shot from the slot into the net at the 7:56 mark. The lead increased when Vladimir Hartinger's shot deflected off Ross McCain and into the net.

Reeder Gets A Pat Down Konrad Reeder gave New Mexico their biggest lead of the game when he worked to the net and scored on the power play. Following the goal, he assumed the position and Craig Macdonald patted him down. The only weapon found on Reeder was his 18th goal of the season.

Austin mounted a comeback with three straight goals of its own. Jamie Thompson caught the Scorps on a line change and put the puck in the back of the net. Late in the first period, John Neal launched the puck from just inside the red line. It caught net minder Mike Minard off guard and ended up in the net. It appeared Austin had a skater in the zone, but the offside was never called and the goal was allowed.

The Ice Bats took advantage of one of the many two man advantages they had, and tied the game up. Darryl McArthur's slap shot from just inside the blue line made it a 3-3 game at the 8:38 mark of the middle period.

With the Scorpions still down a man, Chris Robertson won a puck race and skated into the offensive zone. Robertson made a nice move to goalie Doug Groenestege moving and lifted the puck into the net for game winning goal.

The night did not go by without some amazing saves. With less than five seconds remaining in the second period and Austin again on the power play, Minard made a spectacular glove save, holding the Scorps lead. Fire wins the 2008 Badges Cup. It was a special night at the Santa Ana Star Center as the Scorpions honored those who work in public safety. Prior to the Scorps game, the firefighters beat the police officers 7-3 in the badges game. The fire department would go on to win the Badges Cup for the second straight year by also winning the ticket sales and tug of war. The police grabbed a couples points by winning the bed and tricycle races.
