Rocky Mountain Rage News Release
Hidalgo, Texas - The Rocky Mountain Rage dominated the first two periods at Dodge Arena, out-shooting the Rio Grande Valley Killer Bees, 33-12, and taking a 5-0 lead to the third period before finally closing out a 5-3 victory to snap a three-game winless skid.
Colt King opened the scoring for the Rage, sweeping in a rebound on the power play at 7:46 of the first period. He then set-up Chip Dunleavy, who was driving toward the net and deflected in his fifth goal of the year at 19:00 to give Rocky Mountain a 2-0 edge through 20 minutes.
The Killer Bees had a chance to cut into the Rage lead early in the second period when they skated on three consecutive power plays, including a lengthy stretch with a two-man advantage, but Rocky Mountain's Daymen Rycroft instead struck with a short-handed goal on the third of the power plays to give his club a 3-0 lead at 4:10 of the frame. Rycroft then notched his league-leading 16th power play goal at 8:02 before Tyler Butler scored off a one-timer on the power play at 14:25 to give the Rage a 5-0 lead heading to the third.
Rio Grande Valley began to rally early in the third as Rob Voltera and Bernie Chmiel each scored in the period's first minute to close the gap to 5-2. Travis Banga did not score the Bees' third goal, though, until there was only 1:08 remaining, and the Rage skated away with the win.
The victory moves Rocky Mountain to 29-8-4 with 62 points, nine points ahead of the Colorado Eagles atop the Northwest Division.
The Rage's seven-game, five-city road trip finally concludes in Tulsa on Tuesday, Feb. 5. Rocky Mountain then returns home to Broomfield Event Center on Feb. 8 and 9 against the Arizona Sundogs and Odessa Jackalopes.
