New Mexico Scorpions News Release

ALBUQUERQUE – The New Mexico Scorpions re-signed two key players from last year's team today, as the Central Hockey League franchise announced that left wing/center Ben Gorewich and defenseman Jeff Alcombrack will return to the team for the 2003-04 season. The Scorpions now have 11 players signed for the upcoming campaign, the team's eighth season in New Mexico. In keeping with club policy, terms of the deals will not be disclosed.

Gorewich, 28, was a key acquisition for the Scorpions last year after being acquired from Memphis along with Alcombrack for Stephen Margeson on Jan. 6. In 31 games with the Scorpions, the 5-foot-10, 185-pound native of Thornhill, Ontario posted 11 goals and 26 points. Gorewich set a new career high with 48 points (18g-30a) in 63 games with both Memphis and New Mexico. He also has championship experience, winning the CHL President's Cup in 2002 as a member of the RiverKings.

Alcombrack, 23, steadily improved as a rookie on the Scorpions' blueline following his arrival in Albuquerque. Although he recorded just one goal and one assist in 31 games with New Mexico, the 6-foot, 192-pound native of Kincardine, Ontario was a consistent player for the team during their all-important stretch run. He finished with four points (1g-3a) and 22 penalty minutes in 49 games between the Scorpions and Memphis.

"Ben and Jeff grew into important roles on our club last season," said Scorpions Head Coach/Assistant General Manager Bill McDonald, "and I expect them to continue to grow this season. Ben is a versatile player who can play center as he showed last season but can also play on the wing as well. Jeff really improved after coming over to us last season, and I expect him to be a rock for us on defense again this year. Perhaps the most important aspects of these two guys are their character and leadership in the dressing room. They're both great team guys.

This weekend will be a busy one for the Scorpions in the Albuquerque area. Friday afternoon, Sept. 5, is another Scorpions Summer Street Hockey Program. The free clinic runs from 3 to 5 p.m. at the team's offices, 6300 San Mateo NE in the Far North Shopping Center. On Saturday morning, the Scorpions will be participating in the State Fair Parade. The team will be making two appearances on Sunday and Monday. On Sunday the team will be at Defined Fitness at the corner of Coors and Montano from 8 a.m. to 12 noon and at Kirtland Air Force Base beginning at 10:30 a.m. Monday, the Scorpions will be represented at the State Fair from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and at Harrison Middle School from 3 to 5 p.m.

After opening the regular season with a five-game road trip beginning in Corpus Christi against the Rayz on Thursday, Oct. 16, the Scorpions return to Albuquerque for their home opener on Friday, October 31 at Tingley Coliseum against their new Northwest Division rival, the expansion Colorado Eagles. Season tickets for the 2003-2004 season start as low as $320, as prices remain the same for the upcoming season. For more information, call the Scorpions office at (505) 881-PUCK (7825).
