New Mexico Scorpions News Release

ALBUQUERQUE – The New Mexico Scorpions of the Central Hockey League announced today that they have made their second trade in as many days with the Memphis RiverKings, acquiring right winger Ben Gorewich and defenseman Jeff Alcombrack in exchange for defenseman Stephen Margeson.

Gorewich, 27, was fifth on the RiverKings with seven goals and 22 points in 32 games this season. The 5-foot-10, 185-pound native of Thornhill, Ontario is in his third full pro season, having won the President's Cup championship last year with the RiverKings when he recorded 31 points (13g-18a). His best season came in 2000-01 with Fort Worth, as he totaled 24 goals and 47 points with the Brahmas.

Alcombrack, 22, is in his rookie season after playing last year with Lykesil in Sweden. The 6-foot, 192-pound native of Kincardine, Ontario has two assists and eight penalty minutes in 18 games.

"We needed to address our offense," said Scorpions Head Coach/Assistant General Manager Bill McDonald, "and by adding a proven player in this league like Ben Gorewich I feel we have done just that. He will be a great complement to Peter Ambroziak and Fred Mattersdorfer on our second line. Alcombrack is a young defenseman who is steady and takes care of things in the defensive zone. This trade will help us get to where we want to be in the second half of the season, and that's in position to make the playoffs.

Gorewich, Alcombrack and defenseman Kris Currie, acquired from the RiverKings yesterday, are expected to be in the lineup when the Scorpions return to action this Friday, Jan. 10 to visit the Amarillo Gorillas for the second time in a week. Faceoff is at 6:11 p.m. MST. The game can be heard on SportsRadio 610 The Sports Animal beginning with Scorpions Pregame at 5:55 p.m. The Scorpions return to Lubbock on Saturday, Jan. 11 for a 6 p.m. MST game against the Cotton Kings.

The next home game is Wednesday, Jan. 15 when the Scorpions face the Corpus Christi Rayz for the only time this season. Faceoff is 7:05 p.m. The Scorpions will debut their third "gold" jerseys for the first time this season in that game, being dubbed "Frank Bowl I" as WD Sports owns the Scorpions and last month assumed ownership of the Rayz.

Individual game tickets start as low as $11 and are on sale NOW at the Scorpions Team Store and all TicketMaster locations, including selected Smith's Food and Drug Centers, Foley's, Merlin's Disc Jockey, on the Internet at www.ticketmaster.com and charge-by-phone by calling 883-7800.
