Scorpions Finish Hectic Week with Big Win

SCORPIONS ON THE RADIO – The Scorpions are teaming up this season with SportsRadio 610 The Sports Animal to bring you all of the Scorpions action on the radio. Mike Sheehan is in his first season as the Voice of the Scorpions. Friday's game is scheduled to air on SportsRadio 610 The Sports Animal while Saturday's game will air on 1050 AM KTBL.

SCORPIONS HOCKEY TALK – The Scorpions' weekly radio talk show resumes this Wednesday, Jan. 8 from 6 to 7 p.m. on SportsRadio 610 The Sports Animal, live on location at the Corner Pocket, 9603 Lomas NE just west of Eubank. Scorpions Hockey Talk features new Scorpions coach Bill McDonald and the "Voice of the Scorpions" Mike Sheehan, along with special guests each week.

SCORPIONS GETTING READY TO STING THE RAYZ –The Scorpions return to Tingley Coliseum on Wednesday, Jan. 15 when the face the Corpus Christi Rayz for the only time this season. Faceoff is 7:05 p.m. The Scorpions will be debuting their third "gold" jerseys for the first time this season in that game, dubbed "Frank Bowl I" as WD Sports owns the Scorpions and last month assumed ownership of the Rayz. Saturday, Jan. 18 against Odessa is KRQE Crimestoppers Rally Towel Night, with FREE rally towels going to the first 1,000 fans.

SCORPIONS RECAP

SCORPIONS 3, EL PASO 2 – The Scorpions erased a 2-0 deficit and took a 3-2 win over the El Paso Buzzards last Monday in El Paso. Craig Stahl scored a power play goal late in the second period to put the Scorpions on the board. Peter Ambroziak tied the game 4:19 into the third period on a breakaway, then scored the game-winner with 6:55 left on the power play. Luciano Caravaggio made 30 saves for the Scorps.

LUBBOCK 3, SCORPIONS 2 – The Scorpions had the potential tying goal waved off at the buzzer and fell to Lubbock 3-2 on New Year's Eve, ruining the return of Scorpions coach Bill McDonald to Lubbock. Chris Richards and Arturs Kupaks scored 4-on-3 power play goals 1:21 late in the second period, but the Kings scored twice in the third for the victory. Scott Myers made 34 saves in goal, including all 17 during a busy first period.

AMARILLO 5, SCORPIONS 1 – The Gorillas used the strength of four goals in the third period to take a 5-1 victory over the Scorpions on Friday in Amarillo. Fred Mattersdorfer scored the only goal for the Scorpions. Scott Myers made a season-high 40 saves in goal.

SAN ANGELO 4, SCORPIONS 1 – The Saints took their first win of the season in four tries against the Scorpions with a 4-1 decision on Saturday at Tingley Coliseum. San Angelo scored three times in the first period, then added a goal early in the third. Pete Brearley got the Scorps on the board, redirecting a point shot by Shaun Peet.

SCORPIONS 4, LUBBOCK 3 – Three goals in the final eight minutes turned a 3-1 deficit into a 4-3 Scorpions win at Tingley Coliseum yesterday, narrowing the gap between the Scorpions and the Cotton Kings to just three points in the Southwest Division. Chris Richards scored the game-winning power play goal with 2:48 remaining and added an assist. Pete Brearley and Arturs Kupaks tied the game by scoring 42 seconds apart. Craig Stahl also had a goal and assist for the Scorps, while Brearley also added two helpers. Scott Myers got the win with 25 saves in goal.

SCORPIONS MATCH-UPS

AMARILLO – After Friday's victory, the Gorillas are now 3-1 against the Scorpions this season. Amarillo is one of the hottest teams in the CHL, with 11 wins in their last 14 games. They are a perfect 7-0 in shootouts this year after beating Tulsa on Saturday. Henry Kuster continues to lead the Gorillas with 31 points (18g-13a), while Dorian Anneck had a good week and is next with 30 points (10g-20a). Former Scorpions goalie Steve Debus is 12-6-0 with a 2.68 GAA.

LUBBOCK – The home team has won all five meetings this season, giving the Cotton Kings a 3-2 edge in the season series entering Saturday's game in Lubbock, the third game in 12 days between the teams. All-Star starter Blaz Emersic leads Lubbock with 39 points (15g-24a), followed by Jan Melichercik (7g-20a-27pts) and Derek Gauthier (12g-15a-27pts). Barry McKinlay leads all CHL defensemen with 12 goals. Mike Brusseau (13-11-4, 2.76 GAA) is third in the league with 1611 minutes played and three shutouts.

MAKING MOVES – The Scorpions made their first trade of the season on Sunday, acquiring defenseman Kris Currie from the Memphis RiverKings for defenseman David Bourque. Currie, 23, had three assists and was tied for the team lead with 121 penalty minutes in 32 games with the RiverKings. The Scorpions also signed free agent left wing Lukas Sedlacek prior to yesterday's game. The 20 year-old native of Olomouc, Czech Republic had 17 points (7g-10a) in 26 games earlier this season for the Great Falls Americans of the America West Hockey League, a Junior "A" league.

STINGERS – Scorpions All-Star starter Chris Richards is tied for sixth in the CHL with 46 points (21g-25a)... Richards is fifth with 21 goals and third with ten power play goals... Richards has now moved into the Scorpions top ten list all-time in points (9th, 112), goals (10th, 48), and assists (10th, 64)... Arturs Kupaks is sixth among CHL defensemen with 30 points and tied for fifth with eight goals... After playing seven games in ten days, the Scorpions now play five games in the next 18 days... In half a season, Tyler Baines has equaled his assist total of 20 from last season.
