Laredo Bucks News Release

(1/06/03) The Laredo Bucks opened 2003 and closed the first half of their inaugural season with victories against Lubbock and Odessa at the Laredo Entertainment Center. With 32 games left to play (16 home and 16 away), the Bucks are 19-9-4, eleven points behind first-place Austin in the Southeast Division of the Central Hockey League. At the Laredo Entertainment Center, the Bucks are 12-3-1 and averaging 6,699 fans per game!

All-Star Eric Schneider racked up six points in three games last week, including a hat trick in Saturday's 6-1 win over Odessa, the top team in the Southwest Division. Schneider leads the Bucks with 22 goals, 27 assists and a +15 in 25 games. Rookie Joey Sewell, last week's CHL Player of the Week, continued his torrid pace two goals Friday against Lubbock and two more against Odessa. With 21 goals, Sewell has moved into a tie with Chris Grenville, just one behind Schneider for the team lead. But the biggest news of all in a big week for Laredo's star rookie came on New Year's Day. Joey Sewell and Meredith Hamilton celebrated the birth of their baby daughter, Mikayla Rose Sewell, at 10:15am on January 1, 2003. The newest member of the Bucks family weighed in at nine pounds, four ounces.

All-Star defenseman Michel Periard, recalled last week by San Antonio, has two assists in two games with the Rampage. Periard and Eric Schneider are slated to represent the Bucks at the CHL All-Star Game in Oklahoma City January 23. Center Dave Gove, who started the season with the Bucks, has three goals and nine assists in 30 games with San Antonio.

On Thursday, the Bucks welcome the El Paso Buzzards to the Laredo Entertainment Center for the first time. El Paso is currently in fourth place in the CHL's Southwest Division. Friday, the Bucks play in Austin for the first time since October 19. The Ice Bats won that game, 3-1, and have won three of four from the Bucks this season. In the last meeting on New Year's Eve, the Bucks outshot Austin 57-17 but lost the game, 4-3. On Saturday, the Bucks lock horns with the Corpus Christi Rayz. After losing their first two encounters with Corpus Christi, the Bucks have won the last four. Saturday's game is another opportunity to take advantage of the Family Four Pack with coupons at Laredo National Bank or in the Laredo Morning Times: four tickets, four hot dogs, four Cokes and four orders of popcorn all for just $40.
