Richmond Kickers News Release
RICHMOND, VA - (Wednesday, March 21, 2007) - In an effort to bring soccer to the classroom and make reading more fun, the Richmond Kickers are pleased to expand the "Score With Reading!" program to include 14 schools throughout Chesterfield County, Hanover County, Henrico County and the City of Richmond.
The Richmond Kickers' "Score with Reading!" program is a three-month reading incentive program that encourages students to improve their reading skills. This program fosters student achievement without cost to the school. Students are given an opportunity to earn two (2) complimentary youth tickets to the Richmond Kickers game on Saturday, June 9th versus the Wilmington Hammerheads when successfully completing the program. Teachers select three reading goals tailored to the specific needs of their students. When a student successfully reaches a goal, teachers sign a specially provided Richmond Kickers' bookmark. When all three goals are achieved, that student has scored a "hat trick" and receives their two complimentary Richmond Kickers' youth tickets.
"The Richmond Kickers 'Score with Reading!' program allows us to reinforce the life lessons taught in the local school systems: citizenship, scholarship, the importance of setting lofty goals and becoming a life-long reader," comments Kevin Goolsby, Vice President-Sales & Marketing. "Additionally, as our professional players are actively involved in the school assemblies, they serve as positive role models, which are so desperately needed in the youth community."
The "Score with Reading!" program was launched as a "pilot" program at a single school in Chesterfield County during the 2004 season and was offered to students in grades 1-5. Due to the program's tremendous initial success, the program has expanded to elementary schools in the following school systems: Chesterfield County, Hanover County, Henrico County and the City of Richmond. With nearly 10,000 students participating in the 2007 campaign, the Richmond Kickers continue to pursue additional schools and hope "Score with Reading!" evolves into a regional endeavor, so that "no child is left behind."
