Vermont Mountaineers News Release
MONTPELIER, Vt. - Vermont Mountaineers starter Zachary Schultz (Indiana, Pa./Kent State) pitched eight strong innings on Saturday, leading Vermont past the Valley Blue Sox, 6-1 in the New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL).
Schultz scattered four hits, allowing just one earned run in his best performance of the year. The righty didn't walk anyone and recorded three strikeouts en route to his third win.
The Vermont offense came alive for six runs. Right fielder Otis Statum (Oakland, Calif./U of Nevada Reno) led the way, going 3-for-4 with an inside-the-park homerun.
Center fielder Cam Walsh (Duxbury, Mass./Northeastern) put the Mountaineers on the board in the second inning when he doubled and scored on an error by the Valley first baseman. Walsh came through again in the fourth with a two-RBI double, driving in Brett Malm (Medford, N.Y./Adelphi) and Abdel Guadalupe (Davie, Fla./Broward).
The Mountaineers tacked on another two runs in the sixth inning. Walsh and Staum both reached base and were driven in on an RBI single by Ben Bavly (Newton, Mass./Northeastern).
Statum then added the final Vermont insurance run in the bottom of the eighth when he hit a fly ball to straightaway center field that got past a diving Mark Grunberg (Hagerstown, Md./Towson). Statum never hesitated rounding the bases and came all the way around to record the only inside-the-park homerun of the season for the Mountaineers.
Valley's lone run of the game came in the top of the second when Nate Soria (Homer Glen, Ill./ Xavier) doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly by designated hitter Hunter Fain (Bridgeport, W.V./ Morehead State). Soria, who was 2-for-4, was the only Blue Sox player to have multiple hits in the contest.
Valley Starter David Marriggi (Plains, Pa./Towson) surrendered three runs (two earned) on six hits over four innings. The lefty suffered his third loss of the season. The Blue Sox have now dropped four straight games.
Vermont (14-16) will host the Mystic Schooners on Sunday night at 6:30 p.m. The game can be heard on CBS Sports 1240-AM WSKI or online via The NECBL Broadcast Network.
