Bay Sox Drop First Game of Unconventional Doubleheader
July 16, 2017 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
New Bedford Bay Sox News Release
In the first game of a "doubleheader" on Saturday afternoon, the New Bedford Bay Sox were stymied by four Mystic Schooners pitchers in a 3-0 loss at Paul Walsh Field.
Saturday's contest started in the bottom of the third inning, as it was a continuation of the June 13th matchup between the two Southern Division rivals. That game over a month ago was halted due to lightning in the area with a scoreless tie.
The visitors struck for a single run in the top of the fourth inning off of Darrien Ragins (Delaware State), who was the starter on June 13th and continued pitching today. Reigning NECBL Player of the Week Tommy Jew led off with a double to right field that dropped in front of three Bay Sox fielders - first baseman Luke Bakula (Kansas), second baseman Corey Joyce (North Carolina Central), and right fielder Jordan Fucci (Samford). Two groundouts plated Jew with the game's first run.
Mystic's starter Connor Lewis hurled the first 2.2 innings prior to the suspension, and reliever Kellen Croce was first on the hill for the Schooners on Saturday. Croce did not allow a hit in his 3.1 innings, which earned the righty his second win of the season.
The Bay Sox had two runners on in the bottom of the sixth, as Croce allowed back-to-back walks to the bottom two hitters in the order - Cody Doyle (Sacred Heart) and Dante Baldelli (Boston College). Croce struck out Joyce and Nick Neville (Notre Dame), and got Chandler Debrosse (Central Connecticut State) to ground into a fielder's choice to end the threat.
New Bedford squandered a huge opportunity in the bottom of the eighth, as Doyle and Baldelli were back on the bases with one out. Doyle struck the Bay Sox' first base hit of the afternoon, and Baldelli was hit by a pitch. With Joyce at the plate, Doyle was picked off second base, and the New Bedford leadoff hitter struck out to strand Baldelli at first.
Ragins hurled five innings on Saturday, surrendering one run on two hits and two walks. He was replaced by Jacob Lamb (Richmond), and the Schooners were apparently really happy to see a change on the hill. Jew greeted Lamb by launching a two-run homer over the left field wall for a 3-0 lead, and the Schooners loaded the bases with two outs before the southpaw struck out Andrew Gazzola for the final out.
Mystic closer Turner French allowed a single and a walk to begin the last frame, but a slick play from shortstop John Trousdale started a 6-4-3 double play off the bat of Nick Matera (Rutgers), which ended any chance of a comeback.
The loss moved New Bedford to 12-15 on the season, with Mystic moving back to the .500 mark at 14-14.7
