
Schuldt Lifts Lancers 4-2 over 'Caps

RALSTON, NE - Jimmy Schuldt scored two goals while Steven Spinner extended his scoring streak as the Omaha Lancers pulled away with a pair of goals in the third period to win their fourth straight in a 4-2 victory over visiting Madison on Friday night in front of 3, 365 fans at Ralston Arena.
Omaha scored the opening goal in the first period off the stick of the captain, Jimmy Schuldt. Right off a faceoff win by Jakob Forsbacka-Karlsson, Schuldt took the puck and let a shot go that went through traffic and over the right shoulder of Madison goaltender Darren Smith for the 1-0 lead. The goal came at 14:51 of the opening period with the only assist credited to Forsbacka-Karlsson for his 50th point of the year.
Madison responded late in the first period to even the score at a goal apiece. Freddy Gerard got the puck to Mitch Hults in the hash marks right in front of Omaha netminder Kris Oldham. Hults went forehand to backhand and slid the puck under a sprawling Oldham for his 12th of the year with only 1:56 remaining in the period to send the game to intermission tied 1-1. The Hults' goal was assisted by Gerard on the pass and Cam McCormick.
In the second frame the Lancers took a one goal lead again. The University of Nebraska-Omaha commit Steven Spinner extended his goal scoring streak to three games with his 5th goal in three games. The original shot was taken by Will Borgen from the point. Darren Smith made the save however Spinner gathered the rebound and backhanded the puck by Smith to give the Lancers a 2-1 lead at 12:25 of the second period. With the assist, Borgen recorded his first USHL point in only his second game.
Madison stuck around and tied the game up for the second time of the night late in a period. After scoring with only 1:56 left in the first period, the Capitols tied the game up this time with only 1:47 left while on the power-play. Charlie Gerard took the puck down low and it created a three-on-one opportunity. Gerard fed Daniel Willett who went top shelf for his 5th goal of the year to tie the game 2-2.
In the third period this season, Madison has been outscored 58 to 44 and tonight they were outscored 2-0 as the Lancers picked up a pair for the win.
Shane Gersich recorded the eventual game-winning goal at 5:40 of the third period. After a shot by Drew Best ended up below the goal line, Gersich took the puck and went right to the front of the net. After splitting the defense, Gersich put the puck between the legs of Darren Smith at the top of the crease for a 3-2 Omaha lead with the only assist going to Best who earned himself a Star of the Game.
Jimmy Schuldt finished out Omaha's scoring going off the inside of the post. Louie Rowe and Nick Rivera helped work the puck out to Schuldt who then fired a low shot that rang off the inside of the left post, into the net. The tally was Schuldt's second goal of the night with the helpers from Rowe and Rivera to give the Lancers the 4-2 lead they held on to for the rest of the game.
Kris Oldham earned his 15th victory of the season for the Lancers by putting aside 22 of the 24 shots he faced.
