Sioux Falls Stampede News Release

Waterloo, IA---Dillon Eichstadt's power play goal late in the first period would be all the offense the Stampede needed as they blanked the Waterloo Black Hawks 1-0 Friday night at Young Arena. Stefanos Lekkas earned his seconds straight shutout with 21 saves to guide the Stampede to their season-long sixth straight victory. The win improved the Herd's record to 24-15-5 and kept them four points behind Omaha for third place in the Western Conference. The Herd won for the second time this season in Waterloo and are now 3-2-0 against the Hawks.

Both teams exchanged scoring chances in the first, but the last two minutes of the period provided the most excitement for the fans. With just over a minute left in the period Waterloo's Tyson McLellan broke free on a breakaway, but was denied by Steffanos Lekkas who made a highlight reel save. McLellan faked on his backhand and moved to the forehand, but Lekkas stretched out and made the glove save. On the ensuing face-off, Dakota Joshua drew a penalty to put the Herd on the power play and Sioux Falls cashed in. Cooper Marody danced around the Hawks defense and slid the puck into the high slot for Dillon Eichstadt who fired a shot into the upper left hand corner of the net to give Sioux Falls a 1-0 lead with just 29 seconds left in the period. Sioux Falls outshot the Black Hawks 11-8 in the period.

In the second, both teams would exchange some power play time, but the penalty kill units were strong for both teams as neither team scored with the Herd outshooting Waterloo 7-3.

Waterloo put the pressure on in the third, throwing 10 shots at Lekkas, but he continued his strong play, shutting down the Black Hawks and the Herd defense did the rest as the Stampede held on for a 1-0 victory and two big points in the Western Conference standings. The Stampede outshot the Hawks 23-21 on the night.
