Schmidt repeats as MISL Defensive Player of the Week
March 27, 2006 - Major Indoor Soccer League 2 (MISL 2)
Milwaukee Wave News Release
MILWAUKEE, WI (March 27, 2006) - The Major Indoor Soccer League announced today that Milwaukee Wave defender, Matt Schmidt, has been named the league's Defensive Player of the Week. Schmidt wins the award for the second consecutive week and for the third time this season (December 12).
Now in his fifth season with the Wave, Schmidt led all defenders with five points (four goals and one assist) over the weekend. He began the weekend with a hat-trick and an assist in a 8-7 overtime loss to the Steamers on Saturday. On Sunday Schmidt came back with another goal and tied the team's season-high of five blocks.
The fifth year player out of Yale is having one of his finest seasons as a professional. He was named an All-Star for the first time in February and has set or approached many career-bests this year. With 44 blocks on the season, he leads the MISL and is just one away from a career-high (bettering his mark of 44 set in 39 games last season). He now has 16 goals for the season, four more than his previous career high. Schmidt is also four assists away from tying his best mark of 11.
Schmidt made his Wave debut on November 23, 2001. He attended Yale University and was the 33rd pick in the 2000 Amateur Draft. The former Marquette University High School standout won his first championship with the Wave last season as he played in all four playoff games, scoring two goals to go along with one assist and six blocks. Earlier this season, he notched the 150th block of his career.
The MISL also named the Goalkeeper and Offensive Players of the Week on Monday. St. Louis Steamers forward, Mike Apple, was named the Offensive Player of the Week while Dominik Jakubek of the California Cougars was the top goalkeeper.
Milwaukee faces back-to-back road games on Friday and Saturday. They'll face their border rivals, the Chicago Storm, at 7:30 p.m. on Friday and then move on to St. Louis to battle the first place Steamers at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday. All Wave games are broadcast on The Joy, 1340 AM and can be heard via webcast at www.MilwaukeeWave.com. Tickets for all Wave home games ($12, $14, $16, and $20) can be purchased by calling 414-224-WAVE. Wave tickets are also available at Ticketmaster outlets and www.ticketmaster.com. Groups of 10 or more should contact the Wave Office for group rate discounts.
The Milwaukee Wave was established in 1984 as one of six charter members of the American Indoor Soccer Association (AISA). In 2001, the Wave transitioned to being a successful member of the Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL). Through the guidance of head coach Keith Tozer, the winningest coach in Wave and North American indoor soccer history, the Wave has won four league titles (1997-98, 1999-00, 2000-01, 2004-05), seven regular season championships, and has made seven championship series appearances.
