St. Louis Steamers News Release
MISL Regular Season Championships: With Sunday's 7-6 win in Milwaukee Sunday, the Steamers clinched the MISL Regular Season Championship and secured home-field advantage throughout the playoffs. The Steamers now lead the Milwaukee Wave by four-and-a-half games with only four games remaining on their schedule. Milwaukee has only three games left, all on the road. St. Louis is still waiting to see who they will face in the first round of the MISL Championship Series in April. If they began today, the Steamers would face the Chicago Storm.
Mike "Big" Apple Scores Big When Needed: Mike Apple had himself a weekend to remember. He scored two goals in each of the two Steamers victories giving him four on the weekend. But it was his timing that made the difference. Apple scored his first goal Saturday in the first quarter giving St. Louis a 3-1 lead. But his second goal was a huge momentum shifter when it occurred in the fourth quarter with 14 seconds left in regulation, tying the score 7-7. The Steamers would eventually win the game. On Sunday, Apple found the net in the second and fourth quarter, the latter with 8:46 remaining in the game, and it was the eventual game winner. It also was the eventual regular season championship clinching goal.
Saturday Will be a St. Louis Moment: This Saturday will not only be the final meeting between the Steamers and Milwaukee Wave on the regular season, but it will also be Daryl Doran Tribute Night. The Steamers are proud to retire Daryl's #7 jersey to the rafters of Savvis, where no one will ever where his number again. There will also be a presentation from the Mayor of the City of St. Louis, Francis Slay, who will issue Daryl with a proclamation announcing April 1st, 2006 as Daryl Doran Day in St. Louis. In conjunction with the game, the Steamers will be wearing retro Steamers jerseys from the 1985-86 season. During the game, the Steamers will hold a silent auction for the "jersey off their backs" of the players which will be presented to the auction winners following the game. The proceeds will benefit the Life and Hope fund of St. Luke's hospital.
It Remains Home Sweet Home: The Steamers still enjoy the only perfect record at home in the Major Indoor Soccer League this season. So far, the Steamers are 12-0 at Savvis with three more home games remaining on the schedule. Their next home game is Thursday, March 30th against the Philadelphia KiXX. It's the Steamers School Day Game as several area schools in the area will make a field trip to Savvis to see the game. Start time is for 10:35 a.m. So far this season, the closest margin of victory was a 9-7 win over the Baltimore Blast on Feb. 20th. As far as the defense at home goes, the team gives up less than 3 goals per game while scoring over 7 goals per game on offense.
Steamers in the Playoffs: The Steamers continue to wait and see who they will face in the first round of the Major Indoor Soccer League Championship Series. The series will consist of the top four teams in the final standings with the first place team taking on the fourth place team in the opening round. If the series began today, the Steamers would be taking on the Chicago Storm, with the Steamers choosing which city the series will start in.
Reiniger is Closing in on Milestone: Joe Reiniger continues to hunt for his 600th career professional indoor goals for a career. He is currently at 599 goals. He had some chances this weekend totaling with five shots, but not connecting on any. He did record three assists on the weekend including setting up the game-winning goal on Sunday, and also setting up the game-tying and winning goals in the exciting battle Saturday at Savvis. Being from the St. Louis area, he would like to be able to do it at home.
The Week Ahead: The Steamers will have their busiest week of the season as they will play three games on consecutive days, beginning with the School Day Game on Thursday. After that, they will travel to Baltimore's 1st Mariner Arena to take on the Blast. The Steamers have not faired well in Baltimore losing both games there by scores of 12-5 (Nov. 19th) and 12-7 (Jan. 28th). Then they will come back home to face the Milwaukee Wave one final time in the regular season on Saturday for Daryl Doran night. The Steamers will be retiring his number 7 and raising it to the rafters in Savvis.
