Schepke, Lancers Power By Musketeers, 7-1

Matt Schepke's second three-goal hat-trick of the season helped lead an offensive power surge into the New Year, as the Lancers dusted off the Sioux City Musketeers, 7-1, on December 30th at the Mid America Center. The Lancers' win came in their first game back from the Christmas holiday break before 3,211 fans and came with three of their players representing their country in the Viking Cup international tournament in Camrose, Alberta, Canada.

Robby Dee opened the scoring for the Lancers in the first period, coming on the power play, and assisted by Matt Thurber and Corey Toy at 11:51. Schepke then followed with another power play goal, this one coming at 14:13 on a feed from Ryan Raven and Nick Schaus for a 2-0 intermission advantage for the Lancers.

In the second period, the Lancers scored three more times for a 5-0 lead after 40 minutes of play. Raven scored his ninth goal of the year from Chris Moran and Matt Moulakelis at 6:35, Moulakelis then followed with his second of the year from Brett Bruneteau at 16:05, and Schepke added a shorthanded goal (his fourth of the year) from Mark Olver at 18:22.

Schepke started collecting hats when he scored his 20th goal of the year and third of the night at 5:28 of the final frame for a 6-0 Lancer lead, on the power play and assisted by Moran and Schaus. The goal was also Matt's seventh power play tally of the season. Sioux City scored their only goal of the night at 7:22 from Philip DeSimone on the power play, but Thurber answered with his own power play goal at 14:50 for the final margin, assisted by Nick Krates and Toy.

For the game, the Lancers were 4-for-8 on the power play, while allowing one power play goal in eight Sioux City tries. The Lancers also out shot the Musketeers 35 to 19 in the victory.

Mike Spillane got the win in net for the Lancers, stopping 18 of 19 shots on goal. Jerry Kuhn started the game for Sioux City in goal and suffered the loss, making 15 saves and allowing four goals. Beau Erickson relieved Kuhn and made 13 saves while allowing three goals.

The Lancers next play Cedar Rapids in a 5:00 PM contest at the Mid America Center on Sunday, January 1st.

VIKING CUP NOTE: Lancer forward Ryan Turek was named captain of the USA team at the Viking Cup in Canada. As of this writing, the American squad was 3-0-0 in first round action with one game to play before the quarterfinal round of the annual event.
