Schaumburg Boomers News Release

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. - The Schaumburg Boomers scored three runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to put away the Windy City ThunderBolts in a 6-2 season opening win Thursday night.

Schaumburg never trailed in the contest, plating single runs in the first two innings to open a 2-0 lead. Gerard Hall, who recorded the first hit and run in franchise history in last season's opener, posted the first hit and run of 2013 with a leadoff double in the first, coming around to score on a Chad Mozingo sacrifice fly. Sean Mahley made it 2-0 in the second with an RBI single to score newcomer Brian McConkey.

Windy City evened the game with two runs in the sixth against starter Mike Giovenco. Giovenco tossed five innings and struck out six in his debut. The Boomers used an unearned run to take the lead in the bottom of the sixth and tacked on three in the eighth thanks in part to a two-run single from Mahley, which finished 2-for-4 with three RBIs. McConkey collected three hits in his debut. Matt Kuna earned the win in relief with two scoreless frames. The bullpen retired 10 in a row at one point in the contest.

The Boomers (1-0), who finished 34-17 at home a season ago, will welcome the Washington Wild Things on Friday night at 6:30 p.m. Fireworks will follow the game. LHP Danny Jimenez will make his debut against LHP Shawn Smith.
