Vermont Mountaineers News Release

MONTPELIER, Vt.- Still looking to claim a spot for post-season play, the Vermont Mountaineers were able to put another game in the win column after defeating the Winnipesaukee Muskrats, ending the night with a score of 6-2 at historic Montpelier Recreation Field.

After a seemingly never-ending rain delay, the Mountaineers were finally able to take the field Tuesday night against Winnipesaukee. The Muskrats came out strong in the first inning loading the bases. Starter Christian Scafidi (Clementon, N.J./ University of Pennsylvania) quickly found his groove, and with some help from the defense, escaped the inning without a run scored. After working a walk from his at bat, Austin Gauthier (Lorton, Va. / Hofstra University) tried to get things started off offensively for the Mountaineers, stealing two bases after an error by the catcher, but could not find his way home.

After quick defensive work by Vermont in the top of the second, Evan Giordano (Sewell, N.J. / Stony Brook University) got the first hit of the night for the Mountaineers with a double to center field. Despite the Mountaineers best efforts, the score remained scoreless going into the third inning.

Winnipesaukee was the first to put a run on the board after an RBI single from Sam Cochrane that brought home the runner on third, leading 1-0 midway through the third. Despite the Muskrats taking the early lead, Scafidi had eight strikeouts in just four innings of work, tying the season high and keeping the Muskrats' bats at bay, However, Vermont still trailed by a run after four innings.

Winnipesaukee put up another run in the top of the fifth after two outs before the Vermont defense limited the damage, only trailing 2-0. However, that lead did not last as Straton Podaras (Glen Head N.Y. / Radford University) got his first hit of the night, starting the offense off with a single to the outfield in the bottom of the fifth inning, followed by a walk to Brian Goulard (Garden City, N.Y. / Hofstra University). Right fielder Curtis Robison (Dillsburg, Pa. / Penn State University) gave Vermont its first lead of the night on an 0-2 count, blasting the pitch over the right center field fence, putting the Mountaineers up 3-2.

Relief pitcher Nicholas DeGennaro (Toms River, N.J. / Stony Brook University) made quick work of the Muskrats offense with a one-two-three outing to start the sixth inning. Corey DiLoreto (Reading, Mass. / Northeastern University) continued the onslaught by the Mountaineers offense, starting the bottom of the sixth inning off with a single to center field. With another hit from Giordano, DiLoreto made his way around the bases and racked up another run for Vermont on two fielding errors. The Mountaineers added another run in the inning on a sacrifice fly to Goulard, before tacking on a run in the seventh on a single by Connor Charping (Trenton, Mich. / Western Michigan University.

DeGennaro continued his sharp outing from the pen, picking up the save after the Muskrats put a pair of runners on base in the ninth. He finished with five strikeouts over four innings, while giving up just one hit and a pair of walks.

Scafidi earned the victory for Vermont, going five full innings, allowing a pair of runs, just one earned and finished the night with a season-high nine strikeouts. He improved to 4-3 on the season. Vermont sits just a half game out of the third and final playoff spot, behind Upper Valley and Valley. The Mountaineers conclude their home schedule tomorrow, July 31 against the Sanford Mainers at 6:30 p.m.
