Moncton Wildcats News Release

Moncton, NB -Cancer survivor Kevin Rickard and the Moncton Wildcats are 2 and 0 in the QMJHL final series. Rickard, a season ticket holder with the Wildcats, has been given a day pass from the Stan Cassidy Rehabilitation Centre in Fredericton to see his Wildcats battle the Saint John Sea Dogs for the Presidents Cup.

Kevin has been fighting cancer since the fall of 2008. After initial chemotherapy it appeared his disease was in remission but it came back just months later. Because of a year of treatments, Kevin and his wife Anella, who live in the provincial capital, missed attending Wildcats games. In addition, the illness has had a huge financial impact on the couple.

When Nicola Riopel returned to Moncton from the Philadelphia Flyers farm team shortly before Christmas, he struck on the idea of helping the Rickards with a Saves for Cancer Campaign. The outstanding goalie promised to donate $1.00 for every save made during home games and $2.00 per save during the playoffs. The Wildcats organization quickly agreed to match the amount. Brent Daborn, the Wildcats number one fan, who has cerebral palsy, joined Rio with a donation of .25 cents from his allowance for each save.

When the story appeared in the press and on the Wildcats website last week, Rachel and Galen Gallagher decided to join the Saves for Cancer project. They pledged an addition $1.00 per save plus $2.00 for each goal the Wildcats score in the final round.

After the first two games of the Presidents Cup final, the Gallagher's donation amounts to $53.00, coupled with the contribution from Rio, the Wildcats and Brent Daborn, the fund now stands at $1304.50.
