Savannah Hands Catfish Seventh Straight Loss in 8-3 Final

COLUMBUS, GA--- Savannah's RF Edgardo Baez snapped a 2-2 tie in the fifth inning with a two-run HR, and the Sand Gnats added four runs in the sixth inning to beat the Catfish 8-3 at Golden Park this afternoon. While the Catfish had hits from eight of nine players in the starting lineup, they fell today for the seventh straight game. LF Sam Steidl had two hits for the Catfish, both doubles, while 1B Dan Batz and RF James Peterson also had two base knocks. The Catfish fall to 13-31 with the loss while Savannah improves to 22-21 with the victory, the eighth over the Fish in 10 games.

Trailing 1-0 in the second, SS David Nicholson doubled home C Juan Apodaca from first to tie the game at one, and Steidl's first double of the game gave the Catfish a 2-1 lead against Savannah starter RHP Greg Bunn. The Catfish had LHP Scott Elbert on the hill today, and while Elbert struck out three batters in the first two innings, he allowed the tying run to score in the third on a sacrifice fly. Facing Elbert in the fifth inning, Baez drove the first pitch of the at-bat over the left field wall, giving Savannah a 4-2 lead.

The Sand Gnats scored four runs in the sixth inning to take a 8-2 lead. The Catfish got a run back in the eighth inning on a Batz RBI single, but failed to win for the seventh straight day. Tomorrow the Catfish try to break the losing streak when they send RHP Javy Guerra (2-3, 5.55 ERA) to the hill at 7 PM for the first pitch at Golden Park.
