Bowie, Md. - Warwick Saupold (2-1) continued his strong start to the season by pitching six and two thirds innings of scoreless baseball to help lead the Erie SeaWolves (20-12) back in the win column with a 5-1 victory over the Bowie Baysox (13-18).
The native of Australia struck out six Baysox batters and gave up just three hits as he earned his second win of the season and improved his earned run average to 2.11.
The SeaWolves took the lead in the first inning. Jamie Johnson and Hernan Perez each hit a single to begin the game. Daniel Fields then walked to load the bases for Tyler Collins. The cleanup batter hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Johnson and give the SeaWolves the edge.
In the fourth inning, the SeaWolves used a pair of two-out hits to add to their lead. James Robbins singled through the hole at second base to keep the inning alive. Wade Gaynor then drilled a one-strike pitch over the high left field fence for his fourth home run of the season, making the score 3-0.
Collins laced a one-out double to left-center field in the sixth inning for his eighth two-bagger of the season. He then scored Erie's fourth run as he was driven in from an RBI single by Robbins to left-center field, the 16th run batted in for Robbins this season.
Erie increased their lead further in the eighth inning with a leadoff home run by Collins, his league-leading eighth round tripper of the season. Collins crushed a ball to deep center field to expand the SeaWolves advantage to 5-0.
Bowie scored their lone run of the game in the eighth inning on a RBI double by Ty Kelly. Tyler Stohr faced a bases loaded, one out jam and was able to escape out of it unscathed by striking out Henry Urrutia and retiring Zelous Wheeler on fly ball to centerfielder Johnson.
Stohr pitched a scoreless ninth for the SeaWolves to earn his first save of the season. Collins, Robbins and Gaynor each had two hits to lead the Erie offense.
The SeaWolves continue their series tomorrow evening in Bowie with a 7:05 p.m. start. Lefty Matt Crouse (3-1, 3.33) will take the mound for the SeaWolves against Baysox righty Mike Wright. Listen to all the action online at SeaWolves.com or by tuning in to Fox Sports Radio AM 1330 The Fan.
