Gibson, Murphy Named to OHL Second All Star Team

The Ontario Hockey League today announced the All-Star teams for the 2012-13 OHL regular season. Kitchener Rangers captain Ryan Murphy and goaltender John Gibson were named to the Second All-Star Team. It is the third consecutive year that defenceman Murphy has been listed All-Star, while Gibson has be named to an All-Star squad in back-to-back years.

Murphy captained the Rangers during their 50th Anniversary season, and made his National Hockey League debut in February 2013. Selected in the first round (12th overall) by the Carolina Hurricanes in the 2011 Entry Draft, the offensively gifted rearguard has scored 220 points in 228 regular season games in Kitchener. The Aurora, ON native was the Rangers' top scoring defenceman in 2012-13, with 10 goals and 38 assists in 54 games. He also represented Canada at the 2013 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship in Ufa, Russia.

Originally drafted by Kitchener in the 2009 OHL Priority Selection, Gibson posted a 17-9-0-1 record in 2012-13, including an opening night shutout of the Mississauga Steelheads and was the first Vaughn CHL Goaltender of the Week of the season. The Pittsburgh, PA native led the Rangers with a 2.41 goals against average and a .928 save percentage in the regular season. Selected by the Anaheim Ducks in the second round of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, Gibson also backstopped the United States to a gold medal at the 2013 IIHF World Junior Hockey Championship, where he was named tournament MVP.

The OHL All-Star Teams were selected by the OHL's General Managers. Players were voted on by position and received five points for a first place vote, three for a second place vote, and one for a third place vote. In the case of defencemen, the top two selections received five points, the third and fourth selections received three points, and the fifth and sixth selections each received a single point.
