Saginaw Spirit News Release
Saginaw, MI - The Saginaw Spirit came out on the winning end of a tightly-contested, West Division battle with the Soo Greyhounds Thursday night by a final score of 2-1 in front of 3,478 fans at The Dow Event Center in Saginaw, Michigan. Overage captain Cam Baber scored two assists on the night, while goaltender Andrew Oke made 25 saves to preserve the Spirit victory on home ice.
Saginaw came out in the first period hoping to ride the momentum on a shootout victory Wednesday night in Flint, by having a good start in the opening frame. It was the goalies who were the story, as both Tucker Tynan of the Soo and Oke for the Spirit turned away may would be scoring opportunities. At 7:36 of the period, Calgary Flames prospect Rory Kerins was pulled down by Roberto Mancini and awarded a penalty shot. Andrew Oke came up with the stop to keep the game scoreless. In the dying seconds of the first period, the Spirit worked the puck down low with Dean Loukus, Camaryn Baber, and Matyas Sapovaliv. Baber tucked a pass into Sapovaliv, who quickly snapped the pass under the pads of Tynan with only two seconds left in the period.
The middle frame saw a scoreless result with the goaltenders continuing their battle. Oke made 11 saves on 11 Soo shots, while Tynan stopped all five shots put on by the Spirit.
The Hounds took advantage of an early gaff in the defensive zone by the Spirit in the third. Bryce McConnell-Barker and Marco Mignosa broke in and Mingnosa quick, low shot found the back of the net to tie the game, 1-1. The Spirit came back strong after the Soo goal and took the play to the division leaders. At 13:54, the Sault Ste. Marie connection of Camaryn Baber and Calem Mangone put the Spirit in the lead for good. From behind the net, Baber sailed a pass through that Mangone swiped at, and fit through the pads of Tynan to make it 2-1 in favor of Saginaw. Soo pulled Tynan late for an extra skater, but was denied by Oke and the strapped Spirit defense, who once again dressed just four defenseman and asked forward Josh Bloom to play defense this evening.
The Spirit take on the Flint Firebirds on New Year's Day, Sat. Jan. 1 at 7:05 p.m. at The Dow Event Center. For tickets, log on to www.saginawspirit.com/single
