SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - In preparation for the 2014-15 NBA D-League season, the Santa Cruz Warriors will hold open tryouts in October. Aspiring pros will have the opportunity to showcase their skills in front of Warriors coaches on Saturday, October 18 at the Golden State Warriors Practice Facility in Oakland (the fifth floor of 1011 Broadway).

"Every year, the NBA D-League opens its doors to players who don't necessarily get the greatest opportunities to showcase their skills," said Santa Cruz Warriors Head Coach Casey Hill. "We're always looking to build on our success after earning the NBA D-League 'Development Champion' award last season, and open tryouts are one of those opportunities to continue discovering quality talent. We take this seriously, and we're excited to see what we can find."

Tryouts are scheduled to begin at 11:00 a.m. and conclude by 3:00 p.m., with registration beginning at 10:00 a.m. Registration packets are available online at www.santacruzbasketball.com or at the Santa Cruz Warriors headquarters at 903 Pacific Avenue in Santa Cruz. The fee to secure a tryout spot is $100 for pre-registration and it increases to $125 on the day of tryouts. Space is limited at the tryouts, so advanced registration is recommended to secure participation. The proceeds will benefit Santa Cruz Warriors community programs, including the team's Read to Achieve partnership in the Santa Cruz City Schools.

In recent years, several players have had success after attending open tryouts with the Santa Cruz Warriors. Kiwi Gardner, who impressed coaches during an open tryout last season, was drafted by the Warriors and appeared in 35 games, most recently competing with the Golden State Warriors at NBA Summer League this offseason. Kevin Kotzur, who ranked fourth in the NBA D-League in field goal percentage last season (.595), and Daniel Nwaelele, who led the Warriors in free throw percentage during the team's inaugural year (.868), each joined the Warriors after successful tryouts, while Santa Cruz has drafted two additional players who competed during tryout sessions (Japeth Aguilar and Arron Mollet).
