Sanford Stays Alive with Win over Mountaineers

SANFORD, Maine - The Vermont Mountaineers were blanked by the Sanford Mainers, 5-0, in New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) action at Goodall Park on Thursday night.

With the loss, the Mountaineers fall to 24-16 on the summer. Sanford improves to 22-18 and sits just two games behind first place Vermont with two contests remaining on each team's schedule.

The Mainers took an immediate 1-0 lead in the first inning. Third baseman Sam Dexter (Oakland, Maine / Southern Maine) hit a one out single. Designated hitter Shaine Hughes (Sewell, N.J. / Monmouth) followed with a single to setup first and second with one out. After first baseman Dalton Thomas (Grenada, Miss. / Arkansas-Little Rock) walked to load the bases, leftfielder Nate Stepna (Las Vegas, Nev. / Cochise) reached on a fielder's choice to score Dexter and make it 1-0. Stepna picked up an RBI on the play.

Sanford added single runs in the fifth and sixth before putting the game out of reach with two runs in the seventh to make it 5-0. Catcher Harrison Wenson (Farmington Hills, Mich. / Michigan) led off the seventh with a walk. Centerfielder Johnny Slater (Southfield, Mich. / Michigan) followed with a two-run homerun down the right field line to make it 5-0.

The Mountaineers recorded just two hits in the game.

Sanford starter Blake Morgan (Durham, N.C. / North Carolina Central) earned the win to move to 4-1 on the summer. The southpaw dealt seven scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and one walk. He struck out six.

Vermont starter Joe Rocchietti (Green Brook, N.J. / Manhattan) pitched well, but took the loss, dropping to 0-1 on the season. Rocchietti tossed five innings and gave up two runs (one earned) on three hits and two walks. He struck out two.

The Mountaineers return to action on Friday night, when they host the Keene Swamp Bats for a 6:30 p.m. meeting at Recreation Field. The game can be heard locally on CBS Sports 1240 WSKI and online at thevermontmountaineers.com.
