HICKORY, NC - Cord Sandbeg's third inning grand slam propelled the BlueClaws to a 6-3 win over Hickory on Friday night at LP Frans Stadium.
Sandberg, who went 3-4 and finished a triple shy of the cycle, has six hits in the first two games of the series and is now 16 for his last 35. His grand slam was his second home run of the year and the third grand slam hit by the BlueClaws this season.
Alexis Rivero, who pitched in the SAL All-Star Game on Tuesday in Asheville, got the last six outs for his seventh save of the year.
The BlueClaws jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning on an RBI double by Kyle Martin, the Phillies 2015 fourth round pick from the University of South Carolina playing in his second professional game.
Then in the third, Lakewood loaded the bases off Cody Buckel without a hit - on a walk and two hit batsmen. The hit came from Cord Sandberg - a line drive grand slam down the right field line to put the BlueClaws up 5-0.
BlueClaws starter Ranfi Casimiro went five innings and allowed three runs, two earned and improved to 3-5. Hickory starter Cody Buckel, who gave up five runs in 2.2 innings, took the loss to fall to 0-2 on the year.
Scott Harris threw two scoreless innings for the BlueClaws before turning the ball over to Rivero.
The series with Hickory continues on Saturday night at 7:00. RHP Chris Oliver (3-5) starts for Lakewood against LHP Brett Martin (3-2).
