
San Rafael Pacifics Complete 2013 Spring Training Roster

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. - The Pacifics have announced the signing of eleven ballplayers to 2013 contracts and will invite them to spring training.
Steve Evarts, a left-handed pitcher, was drafted in the first round (43rd overall) by the Atlanta Braves in the 2006 draft. Evarts, a native of Italy, owns a career 9-8 record with a 3.78 ERA. His best season came in 2007 when he went 4-0 with a 1.95 ERA. He followed that campaign in 2008 by going 2-0 with a 1.50 ERA for the Braves' Single A affiliate.
Bennett Whitemore was drafted in the 44th round of the 2008 draft by the Boston Red Sox, and then in the 32nd round by the Seattle Mariners in the 2009. The Mariners drafted Whitemore once more, in 2010 in the 24th round. The left-hander pitched in Seattle's minor leagues for two seasons (2010, 2011) where he went 4-7 with a 5.23 ERA. His best season came for the independent Traverse City Beachbums when he went 6-4 with a 4.32 ERA. In his career, Whitemore is 10-11 with a 4.89 ERA in 182 innings.
Logan Odom, a 23-year old right-handed pitcher, was drafted in the 8th round of the 2011 draft by the Los Angeles Angels. He pitched two seasons in the Angels organization, for the club's Class A affiliate (Rookie). Over his two season in minor league baseball, he has compiled a record of 4-7 with a 5.51 ERA.
Colin Allen was drafted by the Baltimore Orioles in the 22nd round of the 2007 draft. He pitched for the Orioles' single A affiliate from 2007-2009. In 2008, Allen went 3-2 with a 2.31 ERA. In 404 career innings, Allen has allowed just 184 walks.
David Slovak is a 26-year old side arm pitcher with a career record of 13-9 and a 3.48 ERA. A product of the University of Delaware, Slovak has pitched in the Washington Nationals and Toronto Blue Jays organizations. In 2008, as a member of the Washington Nationals Single-A affiliate, Slovak went 4-2 with a 2.37 ERA with five saves. In his career, Slovak has 12 career saves, 107 strikeouts and only 51 walks in 165 innings.
Right-hander J.J. Whetsel pitched one season in the Los Angeles Dodgers organization, in 2010 for the Ogden Raptors (Rookie), mostly in relief. In 33 innings, Whetsel posted a 7.75 ERA with 27 strikeouts. He pitched for both Calgary and Edmonton in 2011, where he posted 6.85 and 9.39 ERA, respectively. In his career, Whetsel is 1-1 with a 7.63 ERA in 63 innings pitched and 60 strikeouts.
Casey Russell will begin his second season of professional baseball with the Pacifics in 2013. In 2012, as a member of the Fort Worth Cats, in the then-North American League South Division, the right-hander went 2-4 with a 4.43 ERA. He struck out 13 batters in 42 innings pitched. Russell is the youngest son of Pacifics Pitching Coach Jeff Russell, whose other son James is in the Chicago Cubs organization.
The Pacifics have inked 28-year old catcher Matt Kavanaugh to a contract in 2013. The 6-2 left-handed batting Kavanaugh is a graduate of San Francisco State and will begin his fifth season of professional baseball in 2013. Between 2008 and 2010 Kavanaugh played in the now defunct Golden Baseball League for the Reno Silver Sox (2008) and Victoria Seals (2009-2010). In 2010 he played a career high 75 games and hit .315, driove in 38 runs and hit a career-high seven home runs. In 2011, Kavanaugh, played for Maui Na Koa Ikaika, and hit .255. Most recently, in 2012, he played with the Arizona-based Freedom Professional Baseball League.
Matt Quintero is a 2012 San Francisco State graduate, and will make his professional baseball debut in 2013. He played 41 games at catcher for the Gators in 2012 and hit .299 with 20 RBI.
Twenty-five-year-old Kyle Dhanani was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 43rd round of the 2009 MLB June Amateur Draft from Thompson River University (Kamloops, BC). In three seasons in the Brewers organization, Dhanani compiled a career .236 average with 59 RBI. He posted career highs in 2011 with the Helena Brewers (Rookie) in games played (59), runs (29), hits (62), and runs batted in (28).
Jamie McGraw was drafted by the Texas Rangers in the 40th round of the 2008 MLB June Amateur Draft from Corban College (Salem, OR). Pitching for the Rangers' rookie team in Arizona, McGraw hit .325 in 26 games, drove in nine and stole seven bases. He went on to play three more seasons, all in independent ball, in the North American, Frontier, and Golden Baseball Leagues. For his career, McGraw is a .265 hitter with 23 RBI in four professional seasons.
The Pacifics open spring training camp on May 16 with the first full squad workout scheduled for May 17. San Rafael opens the 2013 season on the road in Arizona on May 31 against the Freedom League. The Pacifics' home opener is scheduled for June 11 at Albert Park against the Vallejo Admirals.
