San Jose SaberCats News Release
SAN JOSE, Calif. (April 2, 2008) - San Jose SaberCats kicker A.J. Haglund has been the mark of perfection in 2008, not missing a field goal or extra point attempt this season while being named the Arena Football League Kicker of the Month for March, the league announced today.
"It's an awesome feeling," expressed Haglund, who was named to the All-AFL and All-Rookie Teams in 2007. "I told you guys before the season started that my goal was to keep the extra point streak going and get Kicker of the Month. I got the (honor) so hopefully I can keep the streak going."
The streak Haglund (5-8, 175, Central Oklahoma) referred to is his consecutive PATs made streak which stands at 55 dating back to last season. With two more extra point conversions, Haglund will break Carlos Huerta's team record of 56 successive PATs.
In 2008, Haglund has connected on 34-of-34 PAT attempts and nailed all 10 of his FG tries. He currently leads the league in kick scoring with 64 points and sits in 14th place in overall scoring. His 10 made FGs to start the season established a team record as did his 19 kicking points in a single game (vs ARZ 3/15).
After a breakout rookie season where Haglund set league records for PATs made and attempted, the kicker's personal goal of being named the AFL Kicker of the Year was snatched away by the Austin Wrangler's Mark Lewis, who is now kicking for Columbus.
"That was what I was aiming for last year and I was kind of disappointed I didn't get, hopefully this year will be different," said Haglund. "With Gene (Frederic) snapping and Scott (Rislov) holding we've got a good rhythm right now. It's been pretty automatic and if the line continues to block well we'll keep it going."
With his production in the month of March, Haglund looks to be well on his way to claim the title that many believed he deserved in 2007.
Receiver Chris Jackson of the Philadelphia Soul was dubbed the Offensive Player of the Month, DB Calvin Spears from New Orleans earned ADT Defensive Player honors, Orlando's Marlon Moye-Moore was tabbed the league's Ironman of the Month and WR Chas Gessner also on the Predators, was handed Rookie of the Month accolades. SaberCats wide receiver Cleannord Saintil was selected as a candidate for Offensive Player of the Month.
A premiere franchise in the Arena Football League, San Jose has won three ArenaBowl championships and captured seven Western Division titles, eight consecutive playoff appearances and owns the league's best regular season record this decade.
