
AFL announces monthly honors

NEW YORK - Philadelphia Soul WR CHRIS JACKSON, New Orleans VooDoo DB CALVIN SPEARS, Orlando Predators FB/LB MARLON MOYE-MOORE and WR CHAS GESSNER, and San Jose SaberCats K A.J. HAGLUND have been named Offensive Player, ADT Defensive Player, Ironman, Rookie, and Kicker of the Month, respectively, for the month of March.
OFFENSIVE: Jackson (6-2, 200, Washington St.) leads the AFL in scoring (114 pts) and receiving touchdowns (19) over five games during the month of March to lead the Soul to a perfect 5-0 record. Jackson's 19 receiving touchdowns rank fourth-highest in AFL history for five games to begin a season. Jackson earned Co-Offensive Player of the Week Honors in Week 4 for his 10-reception, 167-yard, six-touchdown performance against the Los Angeles Avengers. He is the only player this season to amass six touchdowns in a game. Philadelphia looks to extend its winning streak to a franchise-best six games when it hosts the Utah Blaze (0-5) on Saturday, April 5, at 7 p.m. ET (FSN Utah - Delay, 4/6 at 5:30 p.m. ET, CSN - Philadelphia - Delay at 10:30 p.m. ET, SIRIUS Radio - Channel 130).
ADT DEFENSIVE: Spears (6-0, 195, Grambling St.) leads the AFL in interceptions and is tied for fifth in tackles as the New Orleans VooDoo posted a 4-1 record to begin the season. Spears also recorded five passes defensed and one forced fumble. The VooDoo defense leads the League in interceptions (12) and takeaways (17) while ranking second in turnover differential (+9). His best performance came in Week 4 against the Cleveland Gladiators as he corralled three interceptions on three consecutive possessions to earn ADT Defensive Player of the Week Honors. He is the only player this season to record three interceptions in a game. The VooDoo host the defending ArenaBowl champion San Jose SaberCats (3-2) on Saturday, April 5 at 7 p.m. ET (AFL NET, CSN Bay Arena/NBC Local - Live, Cox Sports TV Local - Live).
IRONMAN: Moye-Moore (6-3, 250, Maryland) scored a League leading nine rushing touchdowns on 17 carries and registered 26 tackles, three tackles for loss, three passes defensed and one sack on defense in five games for the Orlando Predators (3-2). His best performance came during Week 2 when he recorded three rushing touchdowns on three attempts while notching a game-high nine tackles and one tackle for loss on defense. He is the only player thus far this season to have registered two rushing touchdowns on offense and at least 4.5 tackles on defense three times. Orlando welcomes the Mitsubishi Motors Central Division leading Chicago Rush (4-1) to Amway Arena on Russell Athletic ESPN Arena Football Sunday, April 6 at 2 p.m. ET (ESPN2 HD, ESPN360.com).
ROOKIE: Gessner (6-5, 220, Brown) leads all rookies in receptions (37), receiving yards (376), touchdowns (11), scoring (66 pts) and first downs (28) over the course of his first five games during the month of March as the Predators posted a 3-2 record. Gessner's best performance of the month came in Week 1 as he recorded a game-high 12 receptions for 110 yards and four touchdowns in a 77-56 loss to the Philadelphia Soul.
KICKER: Haglund (5-8, 175, Central Oklahoma) connected on 34-of-34 PATs and converted a League-best 10-of-10 field goal attempts for a League leading 64 total points (kickers) during the month of March that saw the defending ArenaBowl champion SaberCats post a 3-2 record. Haglund's best performance came in Week 3 against Arizona as he converted four field goals (4-of-4) and seven PATs (7-of-7) during San Jose's 64-43 victory over the Arizona Rattlers, setting the team record for points in a game (19).
Offensive Player of the Month candidates included: Chicago QB Sherdrick Bonner, Cleveland FB/LB Marlion Jackson, Columbus WR/DB Derek Lee, Dallas QB Chris Sanders, Georgia QB Chris Greisen, New Orleans QB Danny Wimprine and WR James Jordan, Orlando WR T.T. Toliver, Philadelphia QB Matt D'Orazio and WR Larry Brackins, San Jose WR Cleannord Saintil, Utah QB Joe Germaine, WR Aaron Boone and WR Huey Whittaker.
ADT Defensive Player of the Month candidates included: Arizona DB Isaiah Trufant, Chicago WR/DB Dennison Robinson and DL John Moyer, Columbus DB Nate Coggins, New Orleans DB Lin-J Shell, Philadelphia DB Eddie Moten and DL Gabe Nyenhuis.
Ironman of the Month candidates included: Arizona WR/DB Jerrian James, Chicago WR/DB DeJuan Alfonzo, Cleveland WR/DB Robert Redd, Columbus FB/LB Harold Wells, Dallas WR/DB Will Pettis, Grand Rapids WR/DB Jermaine Lewis and Utah WR/DB J'Sharlon Jones.
Rookie of the Month candidates included: Chicago WR Donovan Morgan, Columbus WR Calvin Russell, Georgia DB Stephen Cason, New York DB Levy Brown, and New Orleans FB/LB Norman LeJune.
Kicker of the Month candidates included: Chicago's Dan Frantz, Cleveland's Jason Ball, Dallas' Remy Hamilton, Philadelphia's Connor Hughes and Tampa Bay's Seth Marler.
