The two have met three times in a single season four times previously from 2001 to 2004. San Jose won all three games from Arizona during the 2001 campaign...FBs Brian Johnson and Phil Glover each scored a pair of rushing TDs in San Jose's 58-50 win on Feb. 12, handing the Rattlers their first-ever 0-3 start.

LAST SERIES MEETING: SaberCats 61, Arizona 49 - Sunday, April 2, 2006 - HP Pavilion - QB Mark Grieb threw a SaberCats single-game record tying nine touchdown passes and San Jose defeated Arizona 61-49 moving within a game of the first place Rattlers in the Western Division. Grieb connected with James Roe and Ben Nelson on first quarter scoring strikes to give San Jose a 13-0 lead after the first period. Nelson and Roe combined for 21 catches, 314 yards and all nine of Grieb's touchdowns helping the SaberCats post their third ever regular season sweep of Arizona. Grieb completed 26-of-37 for 361 yards with no interceptions and San Jose evened the all-time series at 14-14. Arizona's Sherdrick Bonner connected twice with Curtis Fagan in the second quarter, the second coming on a 15 yard pass with just 15 seconds left in the half to bring Arizona within 33-28. But Grieb connected with Nelson on the first play of the ensuing offensive drive on a 41-yard strike upping San Jose's advantage to 40-28 at the break. Arizona narrowed the gap to five points twice in the second half but could never grab the lead. Nelson had the second-most receiving yards in San Jose game history with 203 and five touchdowns on 11 catches while Roe had 10 receptions for 111 yards and four scores. One week after throwing his 700th career touchdown pass, Bonner tossed six in the loss completing 21 of 41 attempts for 347 yards. Fagan was the top receiver with 11 catches for 187 yards and three touchdowns. The SaberCats amassed 378 yards of total offense, the fifth consecutive game they've exceeded the 300-yard mark, against an Arizona defensive unit that entered the game allowing just over 257 yards/game.

THE COACHES:
San Jose - Darren Arbet, 8th season
92-41 (.692) overall; 9-4 (.692) postseason
13-7 (.650) career vs. Arizona
2-0 (1.000) career vs. Gene Nudo
Finishing up his eighth season at the helm of the SaberCats, two-time Coach of the Year Darren Arbet moved into sole possession of 5th place on the AFL's all-time wins list surpassing Perry Moss when San Jose defeated Tampa Bay on Apr. 7 for his 87th career victory. At Los Angeles on Apr. 29, Arbet posted his 90th victory in just his 131st career game and guided the SaberCats to their seventh consecutive winning season and playoff appearance. Under Arbet the SaberCats have posted six double-digit regular season win totals six times and since the start of the 2000 campaign his teams have compiled a 77-29 (.726) regular season record and have set league records for most regular season wins (13 - 2002), most wins in a season (16- 2002), most consecutive wins in a regular season (12 - 2002), most wins to end a season (11 - 2000) and the longest regular season win streak (15 - 2000-01). Last season Arbet became the second fastest head coach to reach 80 career wins, doing it in 111 games. Only Tampa Bay's Tim Marcum, who reached the 80-win mark in 96 games, got to that milestone quicker.

Arizona - Gene Nudo, 1st season
9-8 (.529) overall; 1-0 (1.000) postseason
0-2 (.000) career vs. San Jose
0-2 (.000) career vs. Darren Arbet
The third head coach in franchise history and third in as many seasons, Gene Nudo is now in his 12th season associated with the Rattlers organization and first as the team's Head Coach. Nudo joined Arizona's coaching staff in 1995 taking the role of assistant head coach before becoming a member of the team's front office in 1996. In his 12 seasons at the team level, Nudo's franchises have competed in five ArenaBowls, winning one with Arizona in 1997. A true pioneer in the AFL, Nudo coached the first-ever Arena Football game in Rockford, Illinois in 1986.

IN THE 90's - SaberCats' head coach Darren Arbet continues to climb the AFL's all-time wins list. He joined the 90-win club on Apr. 29 when his team posted a 53-36 win at Los Angeles, reaching the milestone in his 131st game. Tim Marcum reached the 90-win mark in just 112 games and Danny White hit 90 in game No. 130. San Jose's win over Colorado and Mike Dailey on May 6 improved Arbet's career ledger against the four head coaches ahead of him on the list to 27-13 (.675). Arbet is 11-7 (.611) against Danny White, 6-2 (.750) against Tim Marcum, and 5-2 (.714) against both Dailey and Mike Hohensee.

2006 SEASON REVIEW
It's not how you start; it's how you finish, as the saying goes. For the 2006 SaberCats that couldn't have been truer. Sitting at 3-6 and tied for the worst record in the American Conference after nine weeks of play, the SaberCats did the unimaginable. They ran the table, won the Western Division title for the sixth time in franchise history and first since 2003, and ended with the second-best record in the Conference and a 7th consecutive playoff berth. Entering the season with high expectations, the SaberCats saw those dashed with a home opening loss to the expansion Utah Blaze. Not only did San Jose lose its home opener for the first time since 1998, also lost was James Roe, who sustained a concussion on the team's first offensive drive after catching a scoring pass. OS Rodney Wright also injured his toe and left the game early in the first quarter leaving San Jose short-handed in its 48-35 loss. The SaberCats then embarked on a record five-game road trip. They lost at Las Vegas on Feb. 6, dropping to 0-2 for the first time since Darren Arbet became head coach. San Jose got its first win of the year at division rival Arizona in Week 3, but consecutive defeats at Grand Rapids and in overtime at Chicago saw the team floundering with a 1-4 record, its worst five-game start in franchise history. The road trip ended and the bleeding stopped - temporarily - with a win at Utah in Week 6 and the SaberCats returned home to play seven of their last 10 games in HP Pavilion. San Jose suffered a 75-61 loss to Los Angeles at home in Week 7, but a talented rookie emerged to supply a dynamic option to QB Mark Grieb and the team's struggling offense. Ben Nelson, in just his 2nd AFL start, had 11 catches for 168 yards and a pair of scores, and teamed with James Roe, who returned to the lineup in Week 4, to provide a potent receiving duo. Also in that game the legendary Barry Wagner passed Hunkie Cooper as the league's career leader in all-purpose yardage, adding yet another record to his resume. Playing in his first game of the year, Wagner totaled 200 yards on kickoff returns surpassing both Cooper and George LaFrance on the AFL's all-time list. Staring a 2-6 record straight in the face, the SaberCats dug deep in a Week 8 win over Georgia. Mark Grieb and James Roe hooked up on a scoring pass and 2-point conversion with less than 30 seconds remaining in the game to forge a 49-all tie and force OT. San Jose denied Georgia on its 2-point conversion when the Force went for the win after pulling within a point in the extra session. The momentum of a thrilling OT win a week earlier would not carry over and the SaberCats dropped a 51-48 decision at Nashville in Week 9 to drop to 3-6. The streak began with another win over Arizona in Week 10. Grieb threw for 361 yards and tied a team game record with nine TD passes in a 61-49 win. Despite their 4-6 record the SaberCats trailed the division-leading Rattlers by just one game after the win. A trip to Tampa saw the SaberCats win consecutive games for the first time all season and they did it without the help of a TD pass. San Jose tied a league and team record by scoring six rushing TDs and DS Omarr Smith supplied the go-ahead points by returning an interception 16-yards for a score late in the fourth quarter in a 52-43 win. For the first time in his career as San Jose's starting QB, Mark Grieb did not throw a scoring pass. San Jose reached the .500 mark in a 69-59 Week 12 win over Las Vegas. Grieb threw for 388 yards and eight TDs, but it was another fourth quarter defensive score that proved noteworthy. Lineman Rex Richards recovered a fumble in the endzone following a sack by Joe Jacobs, and San Jose had a 10-point lead that the Gladiators could not overcome. The 3-game win streak appeared to be in jeopardy against Austin in Week 13. In the first ever meeting between the teams, the Wranglers built a 21-0 lead after the first quarter and led by 22 points twice during the first half. The SaberCats would overcome the deficit to post the largest come-from-behind win in a regulation game in team history. A key fourth quarter special teams play helped in the rally. Following a TD that cut the deficit to 3 points, Barry Wagner stripped the ball from Sedrick Robinson, who had already returned two kickoffs for scores, on the kickoff and Wes Stephens recovered in the endzone giving San Jose its first lead of the game. It took Grieb's 500th career TD pass, however, to pull out the win. His 5-yard strike to Roe in the corner of the endzone with 17 seconds left lifted San Jose to its 4th straight win. After a 53-36 win in Los Angeles that saw Arbet post his 90th career victory, the SaberCats faced the defending ArenaBowl champion Colorado Crush in a Week 15 battle. Two touchdowns in the final 30 seconds of the first half propelled the SaberCats to a 61-56 win. Charles Pauley went 57-yards for the team's first kickoff return TD of the year with 37 seconds left and Omarr Smith returned an interception 42 yards with no time left to give San Jose a lead it would not relinquish. Despite 371 passing yards from former SaberCat John Dutton, San Jose was able to pull out the victory in a contest that featured the past two ArenaBowl champions. San Jose concluded the season with yet another dramatic victory. Columbus built a 41-26 lead late in the first half, but the SaberCats used a 35-3 second half scoring run to win their 7th straight game and deny the Destroyers a playoff berth. Grieb broke his own league record for passing yards in a season throwing for 302 in the game giving him 4,841 on the year breaking his 2005 record of 4,796. Grieb also led the AFL with eight 300-yard passing games and the SaberCats amassed a league record 5,066 yards of total offense on the year, the first team in AFL history to eclipse the 5,000 level. FB/LB Phil Glover set a team record with 55 rush attempts and led the league with 15 rush TDs. He also placed sixth in the AFL with 156 yards. The team's receiving duo of Roe and Nelson each matched the team record with seven 100-yard receiving games and Nelson became the second rookie in league history to record over 1,400 yards, falling six yards shy of the rookie record with a season total of 1,405. San Jose's remarkable run also gave the team double-digit regular season win totals in six of the last seven seasons.

PLAYOFF NOTABLES:
PLAYOFF HISTORY - San Jose will be making its 7th consecutive postseason appearance and 10th in the team's 12-year history. The SaberCats are 9-7 all-time in postseason play and boast an 8-3 record in playoff games in HP Pavilion, including a 7-1 mark in their last eight. San Jose has not played a home playoff game since a semifinal win over Chicago on June 12, 2004.

STREAKS - The SaberCats are making their 7th consecutive postseason appearance in 2006, the 2nd longest active streak in the AFL. The Orlando Predators own the longest streak at 15 straight seasons. Tampa Bay had its streak of 15 consecutive playoff trips snapped this season. The Chicago Rush are right behind the SaberCats, appearing in their sixth straight postseason.

EVEN AS YOU GO - For anyone interested in numerology, the SaberCats might be a good bet to win the ArenaBowl title in 2006. San Jose has dominated even numbered years winning league titles in 2002 and 2004. San Jose went 12-2 in 2000 but fell one game short of reaching the ArenaBowl that year. This season the SaberCats won the Western Division and thanks to a season-ending seven-game win streak, posted the 2nd best record in the American Conference at 10-6. Over those four seasons the SaberCats have gone 53-15 (.779).

BYE, BYE - A return to a 12-team playoff field also brings a first round bye to the four division winners. The AFL expanded its postseason field in 2000 through the 2003 seasons and the SaberCats were the only team during those four years to earn a week off during the opening round. The league returned to an 8-team format in 2004 and 2005, but San Jose continued the trend this season by winning the West and getting a first round bye.

PLAYOFF WINS - With a victory over Arizona, the SaberCats will become the 5th team in league history to reach double-digits in playoff wins. With a 9-7 postseason record, San Jose sits behind Arizona (21), Tampa Bay (20), Orlando (20) and the Detroit Drive (12) for most playoff wins in AFL history.

AGAINST THE FIELD - The SaberCats have a .500 or better overall record against all the remaining playoff teams and hold a 23-17 overall record against the three American Conference teams. San Jose is 14-14 all-time against Arizona, but owns a 3-1 playoff ledger. San Jose went 6-3 during the regular season against teams that qualified for the postseason.

PLAYOFF TESTED - Of the players on San Jose's 2006 roster (active and IR) who have played in a game this season, 13 were members of the 2004 ArenaBowl championship team and 11 were with the team in its 2002 championship run. The players include Barry Wagner, Clevan Thomas, James Roe, Omarr Smith, Joe Jacobs, Frank Beede, Albrey Battle, Chuck Reed, Mark Grieb and Dan Loney. George Williams, who was lost with a season-ending knee injury in Week 7, was also on the 2002 club. Two players, Battle and Wagner, have played in all 13 postseason games since the 2000 season.

AGAINST ARIZONA - The SaberCats and Rattlers will be meeting for the fifth time in the postseason, the most playoff games against a single opponent for both teams. San Jose has faced Tampa Bay three times and has played a pair of postseason games against Orlando and Nashville. Arizona has also faced Orlando four times in the playoffs. The two have squared off 28 times during the regular season, also the most games against a single opponent for both teams in regular season action.

PLAYOFFS OR BUST - Completing his 15th season in the 20-year-old AFL, WR/DB Barry Wagner has never missed competing in the playoffs. Wagner made eight postseason trips with Orlando from 1992-1999 and joined the SaberCats in 2000, just in time for their current seven-season playoff appearance streak. Wagner has played in seven ArenaBowls, five with Orlando and two with San Jose, winning championships in 1998, 2002 and 2004.

TRENDS:
HOME COOKIN - The SaberCats ended the 2006 regular season by winning six straight games at HP Pavilion to go 6-2 on the year. Since Darren Arbet became the team's head coach in 1999 San Jose has posted an impressive 57-13 (.814) record in all home games and is 8-2 in playoff contests.

THAT 60's SHOW - San Jose reached the 60-point mark for the 4th time in its last five regular season games, the 7th time during the year and the 56th time in team history in a regular season game in a 68-47 season finale win over Columbus on May 13. The SaberCats have won five straight games when reaching the 60-point mark raising their all-time record to 49-7 (.875) when scoring 60 or more points in a regular season game. San Jose is 4-0 all-time when scoring 60-or-more points in a playoff game and has topped the 60 plateau in two of the four tilts with Arizona.

STOPS - San Jose's defense registered seven full stops in its win over Columbus on May 13 and totaled 12 in the last two regular season games and 32 over the season-ending 7-game win streak. During the run the unit has intercepted 10 passes, recovered 6 fumbles and forced 9 turnovers on downs. Sprinkle in five missed opponent FGs, a net recovery and a safety and the defense is averaging over 4.5 full stops a game over the last seven.

STREAKING - Entering the playoffs on an extended winning streak has not necessarily been a good thing for San Jose. The SaberCats entered the 2000 playoffs riding an 11-game win streak before being bounced by Nashville in the second round. In 2003 the SaberCats were on a 5-game streak entering the postseason before Arizona knocked them out, again in the 2nd round. In San Jose's first championship season of 2002, the team split its final two regular season games and in 2004 lost three of their last four regular season games before winning three straight in the playoffs.

GROUND GAINERS - The SaberCats outgained Columbus on the ground 44 to 3 in their season ending win on May 13 to give them a perfect 8-0 record on the year when rushing for more yards than their opponent. San Jose finished just 10th in the league in rushing with an average of 19 yards per game, but scored the second-most rush TDs in the AFL (36) and scored once on every fourth carry.

NOTES:
TITLE TOWN - San Jose clinched its 6th Western Division title and first since 2003, with a 61-56 win over Colorado on May 6. The SaberCats have won the most division titles of any team since the AFL went to a 4-division format in 1995. Arizona, Tampa Bay and Albany each have five division championships to their credit. Dallas won the East this season becoming the second team to win a title in two different divisions. The Desperados won the Central in 2003. Nashville (East-1997; South-2001) is the other team to claim different division titles. The league's tie-break format was used to determine a champion in case of a first place tie.

ON THE MARK - QB Mark Grieb passed for 302 yards in a season-ending win over Columbus on May 13 and broke his own league record for yards in a season with 4,841. Grieb surpassed his 2005 record total of 4,796 and has seen his season passing yardage total increase every year since 2001. Grieb now holds the top two single-season records in AFL history and moved into 6th place, ahead of Todd Hammel, on the career passing yards list with 27,624. Over the past four seasons Grieb has also been the most prolific passer in the AFL, in terms of yards, throwing for 652 more yards than Clint Dolezel, the next closest QB on the list.

FULL NELSON - Rookie of the Year candidate Ben Nelson totaled 81 receiving yards in the season finale against Columbus on May 13 and fell just six yards shy of breaking the league's rookie record, which was set a day earlier by Austin's Derrick Lewis. Lewis ended the regular year with 1,411 yards while Nelson had 1,405 to become the 2nd rookie to reach 1,400. Lewis started all 16 games for the Wranglers while Nelson started the final 11 games for San Jose. Nelson's average of 127.7 yards per game in his 11 starts would rank as tops in the league. Nelson also matched a team record with seven 100-yard receiving games during the campaign.

The former Arizona Rattler led the AFL with 15 rush TDs, the 2nd highest season total in team history, placed 6th in yards with 156 and ranked 3rd in the league with a team record 55 carries. Glover capped his regular season with the finest rushing performance of his career in a win over Columbus on May 13 when he totaled a career-high 42 yards and two TDs on five carries. He ended the game by carrying a number of defenders for extra yardage on his career-long 26-yard scamper.

ROE-LIFIC - WR/LB James Roe tallied 113 receptions on the year, the 3rd highest single-season total in team history and good for 10th place in the AFL. He did this despite missing nearly three full games at the beginning of the year after sustaining a concussion on the team's first offensive series against Utah in the season opener. Roe set a team season record with five double-digit reception games and matched a record with seven 100-yard receiving games. Roe now has 533 career catches and owns the top three season marks in franchise history. In 10 career playoff games Roe has 63 catches for 827 yards and 17 TDs to rank 2nd behind James Hundon in all three categories. He earned ArenaBowl XVIII Ironman honors after tying a title game record with five TD catches in San Jose's 69-62 win at Arizona on June 27, 2004

HEAD TO HEAD - In their careers with their respective teams, QBs Mark Grieb and Sherdrick Bonner, two of the most prolific passers in the game, have started against each other a total of 15 times with strikingly similar results. Grieb has the edge in most every category, including wins. One of Grieb's biggest wins came in ArenaBowl XVIII when he tossed a title game record 8 TD passes. Bonner also had a decent outing throwing for an ArenaBowl record 367 yards in San Jose's 69-62 win. In two regular season meetings, Grieb threw 12 TDs on 44-of-68 passing for 644 yards win no INTs. Bonner completed 45-of-77 for 686 yards with 11 TDs and one INT. Each player has thrown for 83 TDs while Grieb has two fewer picks. Grieb threw for 361 yards and Bonner for 347 when the two last met on April 2, and they each have four 300-yard passing games in their head-to-head meetings.

NICE CATCH - Not only does FB/LB Brian Johnson run the ball, he has soft hands and nimble moves when catching passes out of the backfield. Johnson had a pair of receptions against Columbus on May 13 giving him 11 for the year breaking the team record for catches by a FB. Johnson also had his 1st career TD reception when he rumbled 12 yards against Colorado on May 6. It was the first TD reception by a FB since Matt Kinsinger scored at Orlando on May 17, 2002. Johnson was also the team's 2nd leading rusher with 115 yards on 48 carries and he scored 12 times, tying him for 3rd in the AFL with Austin's Dane Krager and Las Vegas' Jason Fife. Johnson broke the record for receptions a FB which was set in 1995 by Tom Petithomme and matched in 1998 by Mike Maslowski.

CLEVAN THE D-MAN - DS Clevan Thomas snared his 7th interception of the season and 32nd career in San Jose's season ending win over Columbus on May 13. The AFL's Defensive Player of the Year in 2002 and 2003, Thomas was named a second team All-AFL DS last week. Two of Thomas' career picks have come against Arizona's Sherdrick Bonner but none in the playoffs. Thomas does have 2 career postseason INTs, tying him with Omarr Smith, Barry Wagner and Bret Cooper for the team's all-time lead. With his 32nd career INT Thomas moved into a 13th place tie with Dameon Porter on the AFL's career chart, one behind Nashville's Darryl Hammond for the next spot on the list.

ARIZONA PLAYERS TO WATCH:
QB SHERDRICK BONNER - One of the greatest quarterbacks in the history of the AFL, Bonner has started all four playoff games against San Jose and has a 1-3 record in those starts. Bonner has thrown for 1,028 yards and 20 touchdowns completing 76-of-132 passes with 3 INTs in those four playoff appearances. His best playoff game against San Jose came in the semifinals on June 8, 2003 when he completed 21-of-30 for 321 yards with 8 TDs and without an INT leading the Rattlers to a 66-49 win while picking up game MVP honors. Bonner had a better game statistically in ArenaBowl XVIII when he threw for a championship game record 367 yards and 7 TDs, but his potential game-tying scoring pass, intended for Hunkie Cooper, fell incomplete in the endzone as time expired in San Jose's 69-62 win. This year against San Jose, Bonner has completed 45-of-77 for 686 yards with 11 TDs and 1 INT in two games, both losses.

WR/DB RANDY GATEWOOD - One of the best two-way players in the league and Arizona's career TD receptions leader, Gatewood has played in every playoff game against San Jose as a member of the Rattlers. In those four meetings he has totaled 16 receptions for 263 yards and 5 touchdowns adding 8.5 total tackles on defense. His best playoff game against San Jose came on June 8, 2003 when he had 12 catches for 227 yards and 5 touchdowns with 1 tackle on defense earning him Ironman of the Game honors. This season against the SaberCats, Gatewood has been held to only 7 grabs for 144 yards with 3 TDs and 2.0 tackles on defense.

FB/LB BO KELLY - Leading Arizona in rushing this season, Kelly has seen action in every playoff game as a Rattler against the SaberCats. He has been a consistent force on offense rushing 9 times for 31 yards with 4 TDs in the four playoff meetings and added 4 catches for 52 yards and .5 total tackles on defense. This year Kelly has seen action in both games against San Jose and only has 4 rushing attempts for 4 yards with 2 TDs and 1 reception for 4 yards and 1 TD with 3.0 total tackles on defense.
