Arizona Rattlers News Release
PHOENIX - Rattler offensive/defensive lineman Wendall Gaines has been named "ADT Defensive Player of the Week", the Arena Football League announced today.
Gaines (6-5, 290 pounds), who is in his seventh season with the Rattlers, recorded two tackles including a sack for a safety, which changed the complexion of Arizona's playoff game with the Utah Blaze on Saturday night. After the safety, which cut the Rattler deficit to one, Arizona closed out the contest with a 36-3 run, en route to a 57-34 victory.
During the regular season, Gaines tallied 19 and a half tackles and five and a half sacks. He also forced two fumbles on the year.
The award marks the seventh time a Rattler has earned a weekly honor this season, as wide receiver Randy Gatewood earned "Ironman of the Week" on four different occasions (Weeks 6, 7, 9, and 15) and "Offensive Player of the Week" once (Week 11). Offensive specialist Damien Groce was also honored on offense in Week 4.
The No. 3 seed Arizona Rattlers (9-8), winners of ArenaBowl VII and XI, look to advance to the semifinals with a win over the No. 2 seed San Jose SaberCats (10-6) on Saturday, May 27 at HP Pavilion. The contest is set to kick off at 12:30 p.m. PST and can be seen on NBC or heard on ESPN 860 AM.
