Giants To Play Home-And-Home Series With Modesto The San Jose Giants begin a four-game home-and-home series with the Modesto Nuts this evening at Municipal Stadium. San Jose hosts the first two games tonight and tomorrow before the series shifts to Modesto for games on Sunday and Monday. D.J. Snelten is slated to make the start on the mound for the Giants tonight. Snelten achieved season-high totals in innings pitched (6 2/3) and strikeouts (9) in his most recent start last weekend against Lake Elsinore. The left-hander possesses a 26-to-6 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 27 2/3 innings this year.
Winning Ways The Giants enter this evening's contest having won three games in a row and nine out of their last ten. San Jose is also 13-4 in their last 17 games.
Bakersfield Sweep The Giants are returning home tonight after sweeping a three-game series in Bakersfield. San Jose earned victories over the Blaze of 4-3 on Tuesday, 7-4 on Wednesday and 6-0 last night. Yesterday's triumph was the Giants' first shutout of the season. San Jose has now won a season-high seven consecutive road games.
Starting Strong Giants starting pitchers own a sparkling 2.05 ERA (14 ER/61.1 IP) over the last 10 games. San Jose starters have pitched at least six innings in eight out of the ten games. Two Giants starters rank among the top five in the league in ERA: Sam Coonrod (3rd, 1.32) and Jordan Johnson (5th, 2.10).
14-Game Road Trip Looms Following this brief two-game homestand versus the Nuts, San Jose embarks on a season-high 14-game road trip beginning on Sunday. The road trip includes two games in Modesto, three games at Stockton, four games in Rancho Cucamonga, three games at Visalia and then two games back in Modesto. San Jose has only eight home games in May. After tomorrow, the Giants don't have another home game until May 29.
Hinojosa Hits Shortstop C.J Hinojosa had two more hits in yesterday's game to raise his season batting average to .374 - tops in the California League. Over his last 16 games, Hinojosa is batting at a .424 clip (25-for-59). He also leads the league with a .468 on-base percentage this season.
In May The Giants' 9-2 record in May is the top mark in the California League this month. San Jose boasts a 2.57 team ERA in May - second-lowest in the league (Lake Elsinore 2.39).
Roster Moves The Giants made several roster moves earlier this week. Pitcher Andrew Suarez was promoted to Double-A Richmond. Suarez, San Jose's opening day starter this year, was 3-1 with a 2.43 ERA in five starts for the Giants. He ranks sixth in the league in ERA. Catcher Aramis Garcia (.264 AVG, 1 HR, 9 RBI) was also placed on the disabled list with a hamstring injury. Pitcher Martin Agosta returns to the club from Triple-A Sacramento while catcher Ben Turner, a San Jose Giant in 2014 and 2015, also joined the team from the River Cats.
Shaw Surging Over his last 13 games, first baseman Chris Shaw has collected 17 RBI's and slugged four home runs. Shaw has hit safely in 24 out of his last 28 games. The former first round draft pick is ninth in the league in batting average (.328), tied for sixth in home runs (6), tied for third in RBI's (26), tied for first in doubles (11) and fifth in slugging (.578).
San Francisco Affiliation This year is San Jose's 29th season as an affiliate of the San Francisco Giants - the longest current partnership of any team in the California League. Since their inception in 1988, the San Jose Giants have won six league championships (1998, 2001, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2010), 11 North Division titles and qualified for the playoffs 21 times (in 28 seasons). The Giants enter this year having posted a league-record 12 consecutive winning seasons (2004-2015).
Opponent Notes: Modesto Nuts The Modesto Nuts, an affiliate of the Colorado Rockies, are 13-20 this season and have lost 12 out of their last 17 games. The Nuts are seventh in the league in batting average (.242), fifth in runs scored (4.6 per game) and seventh in ERA (4.27).
