San Jose Giants Game

San Jose Giants News Release

Bakersfield's Jordan Cowan hit a go-ahead two-run single in the top of the ninth inning to lift the Blaze to a 3-2 series-opening victory over the Giants on Tuesday evening at Municipal Stadium. Cowan's hit gave Bakersfield their first lead of the game as San Jose (67-67) saw their overall record drop to .500 with the loss.

Miguel Gomez (2-for-3, 2B) had two of the four Giants hits in defeat. Four Blaze pitchers combined to strikeout 20 San Jose hitters in the contest.

The loss officially eliminated the Giants (28-36) from second half title contention. However, Bakersfield's win maintained their five-game lead over Modesto in the second half race with six games to play in the regular season. San Jose would officially clinch the North Division Wild Card when the Nuts are eliminated.

With the Giants ahead by a 2-1 margin on Tuesday, Reyes Moronta was summoned from the bullpen to begin the top of the ninth. Braden Bishop led off for Bakersfield with a grounder to shortstop that was mishandled by Rando Moreno for an error. Moronta then walked Justin Seager on a 3-2 pitch to put the potential go-ahead run on base. Daniel Torres followed with a sacrifice bunt advancing the runners to second and third before Cowan stepped to the plate and singled into shallow center to score both Bishop and pinch-runner Gianfranco Wawoe giving the Blaze a 3-2 lead.

Ramon Morla (2-3) was credited with the win out of the Bakersfield bullpen after tossing two hitless innings over the seventh and eighth. Morla struck out three. Thyago Vieira then struck out the side in a 1-2-3 bottom of the ninth inning to earn the save.

Moronta (0-3) was saddled with the loss for San Jose.

The Giants initially enjoyed a 2-0 lead after scoring single runs in the third and fourth innings. In the bottom of the third, Moreno drew a two-out walk before taking second on a wild pitch. Dylan Davis then singled into left center plating Moreno with the first run of the night.

An inning later, Gomez and Aramis Garcia worked consecutive walks to start the frame. The runners advanced to second and third on T.J. Bennett's groundout before Daniel Carbonell struck out. Cristian Paulino though beat out a slow roller to shortstop for an infield hit as Gomez came home to make it 2-0.

Jordan Johnson started on the mound for San Jose and worked six effective innings with just one run and four hits allowed. Johnson walked two and finished with eight strikeouts - one off of his season-high. The right-hander at one point in his start retired nine consecutive Blaze hitters.

Bakersfield's only run off of Johnson came in the top of the sixth when Jay Baum connected for a two-out solo home run. The homer, Baum's ninth of the season, trimmed the Giants lead to 2-1.

Pat Young (1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 SO) pitched a scoreless top of the seventh out of the bullpen for San Jose striking out the side. Tyler Cyr (1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO) then worked around a leadoff single in the eighth to maintain the one-run lead before the Blaze rallied in the ninth.

Bakersfield starter Tyler Pike registered 10 strikeouts over 4 2/3 innings. Pike surrendered three runs (all earned) and walked five.

Notes - * Tuesday marked the beginning of San Jose's final homestand of the regular season. * Bakersfield's 20 strikeouts are the most by any California League team in a game this season. * The Giants fell to .500 overall for the first time since May 3 when the club was 12-12.
