Cowan's Last Act Provides Dramatic Ending
August 31, 2016 - California League (CalL1)
Bakersfield Blaze News Release
For a team on the way out, the Bakersfield Blaze want to make sure they give their fans everything they have until the last out is recorded.
Jordan Cowan is just the latest example for Bako.
Cowan's dramatic RBI single in the ninth inning off of closer Reyes Moronta (BS, L, 0-3) scored Braden Bishop and Gianfranco Wawoe as Bakersfield came back to shock the San Jose Giants, 3-2.
On a night dominated by pitching, Bakersfield's pesky second baseman provided a timely spark.
Tyler Pike started a strike out rampage for the Blaze as he fanned 10 Giants batters in 4.2 innings. Pike's outing was short lived though because he also walked five and threw 89 pitches in the affair.
Kody Kerski punched out four of the five batters he faced, Ramon Morla (W, 2-3) struck out three, and then Thyago Vieira slammed the door shut on San Jose's division title hopes by striking out the side in the ninth.
Vieira is now a perfect 8-8 in save opportunities, but the bigger buzz comes from the entire Blaze pitching staff.
Named the Cal League Coach of the Year, Blaze Pitching Coach Ethan Katz saw his staff set a new season-high by striking out 20 batters in the thrilling victory.
Bakersfield improved to 36-28 in the second half of the season, still 4.0 in front of Visalia with six games left on the schedule.
