San Jose Giants News Release

SAN JOSE, CALIF June 10, 2008 - Five San Jose Giants players have been named to the California League All-Star Team and will participate in a game versus the Carolina League All-Stars on June 24th in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Catcher Pablo Sandoval and starting pitchers Tim Alderson, Jesse English, Kevin Pucetas and Ben Snyder will represent the defending California League champions in the all-star contest. San Jose Giants skipper Steve Decker will manage the squad.

"It is a great accomplishment to have four of our five starting pitchers and our catcher on the All-Star team," said Steve Decker. "They were selected from the top prospects to represent the San Jose Giants and the California League in the All-Star game, an honor that is well deserved."

The five players selected are the most of any team in the California League this season. Entering play on Tuesday, San Jose boasts the top record in the league at 41-23. The Giants are first in ERA (2.91) and second in batting average (.283).

Sandoval, in his second season with the San Jose Giants, leads the California League with a .364 batting average. The switch-hitting catcher is also first in hits (83), second in runs (53) and slugging percentage (.605), fourth in doubles (21) and on-base percentage (.417) and sixth in RBI (47). Sandoval has also hit 10 home runs.

Alderson, the youngest player on the Giants roster at 19 years old, is 6-2 this season with a 3.27 ERA in 12 starts. The former first round draft pick is tied for sixth in the league in wins and eighth in ERA. Alderson, in his first full year of professional baseball, has been remarkably consistent this season having allowed three runs or fewer in 11 of his 12 starts.

English leads the Giants and is second in the California League with eight victories. The left-hander, who has returned to the role of starting pitcher after spending his last three seasons as a reliever in the San Francisco organization, is 8-2 with the fifth-lowest ERA in the league at 2.84. English has allowed one or no runs in eight starts this year.

Pucetas boasts a perfect 7-0 record in 11 starts this season. The right-hander is second in the California League with a 2.54 ERA and tied for third in victories. Last year's Class A Starting Pitcher of the Year according to MiLB.com, Pucetas has five starts this season in which he has allowed no earned runs.

Snyder currently leads the California League with a sparkling 2.06 ERA to go with a 7-2 record in 13 appearances (12 starts). The left-hander is tied for third in the league in wins and tied for fifth in strikeouts (63). Snyder has surrendered one or no runs in nine of his 13 appearances this season. The southpaw has also displayed remarkable control with only 13 walks in 74 1/3 innings.

Decker will manage the California League All-Stars, an honor resulting from the San Jose Giants winning the 2007 League Championship. He'll be joined in Myrtle Beach by San Jose hitting coach Gary Davenport, pitching coach Pat Rice, and athletic trainer Yukiya Oba.
