
Quakes Peter Bourjos Named To All-Star Squad

Rancho Cucamonga, CA- California League President, Joe Gagliardi, released the names of the 2008 California League All-Star team today. The first place San Jose Giants led all teams with five selections, while the Lake Elsinore Storm and Stockton Ports each had three representatives.
The California League All-Stars will meet the Carolina League All-Stars in their annual battle for "High A" supremacy in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina on Tuesday, June 24th, 2008. The game will be played at BB&T Coastal Field, home park of the Myrtle Beach Pelicans of the Carolina League. The California League All-Stars defeated the Carolina League contingent in Stockton by a 10-5 score in 2007. The series currently shows the Carolina League with five wins, while the California League has four victories and two games have ended in ties.
Rancho Cucamonga Quakes' centerfielder Peter Bourjos will start for the California League team. Bourjos, an offensive catalyst at the top of the Quakes lineup, is batting .335 with 5 triples, 2 home runs and 26 runs batted in. He leads the league with 32 steals in only 34 attempts.
The rest of the 2008 California League All-Star team is comprised of most of the statistical leaders in the league. Pablo Sandoval of the San Jose Giants will be the starting catcher and he currently leads the league in batting average with a .364 mark, hits with 83 and runs scored with 53. Four San Jose Giants starting pitchers, Tim Alderson, Jesse English, Kevin Pucetas and Ben Snyder headline the pitching staff. Together, these four hurlers have combined for an astounding 27-6 won-loss record (.818). English is tied for the league lead in wins with eight, while Snyder has the lowest ERA in the league at 2.31.
Stockton and Lake Elsinore placed three players each. Sean Doolittle, tied for the league lead with 51 RBIs, will start at first base and Archie Gilbert will start in left field. Pitcher, Trevor Cahill, leading the league in strikeouts with 95, will also represent the Ports. The Storm will have two starters, second baseman Eric Sogard, and right fielder Sam Carter. Cedric Hunter is the utility outfielder.
The Modesto Nuts placed two pitchers on the squad, Aneury Rodriguez and closer Andrew Johnston, who leads the league with 12 saves.
The Lancaster JetHawks contributed two starters, DH Jon Still and third baseman Jorge Jimenez.
Representing the Visalia Oaks are starting shortstop Pedro Ciriaco and pitcher Cesar Valdez, who is tied with Jesse English for the league lead in victories with eight.
From the Inland Empire 66ers are back-up catcher Carlos Santana and pitcher Paul Koss.
The Bakersfield Blaze are led by utility infielder Jose Vallejo, while the High Desert Mavericks' Kyle Parker rounds out the pitching staff.
Since the San Jose Giants won the 2007 California League championship, the All-Star squad will be led by San Jose Giants manager Steve Decker, hitting coach Gary Davenport, and pitching coach Pat Rice.
