San Diego Wave FC News Release
SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Thrilled to be back in front of Wave Nation at Torero Stadium, San Diego Wave Fútbol Club (6-3-4) took on Racing Louisville FC (2-5-5) tonight in a nerve-wracking 0-0 draw. Goalkeeper Carly Telford earned her first clean sheet in the NWSL after an impressive six-save performance including an incredible penalty kick save.
Also notable, forward Katie Johnson made her first start of the season tonight and played all 90 minutes, finishing the match with two shots on goal and acting as a spark of energy.
There was a physical start to the match as both teams played with something to prove. San Diego hoped to keep its first-place spot in the standings, and Racing Louisville looked to climb up the table.
Wave FC kicked off with a lot of pressure on Louisville in the attacking half. As the first half went on, the away side increased their chances and force within the match, giving goalkeeper Carly Telford a chance to step up. Telford came up to make four huge first-half saves as she searched for her first NWSL clean sheet.
Telford continued her amazing performance in net in the second half, making a quick reaction save in the 65th minute off a Louisville rebound. In the 72nd minute, San Diego conceded a foul in the penalty area which Racing Louisville's Savannah DeMelo stood over. Telford was ready for the challenge and dove correctly to her right to save the penalty opportunity and send the home crowd roaring.
After recording 19 shots and nine on goal throughout the match, San Diego finished even against Racing Louisville, earning a point with a final score of 0-0.
San Diego Wave FC now hits the road for a top-two matchup with the Chicago Red Stars on Saturday, July 30 at 5 p.m. PT.
