SAN DIEGO - San Diego Wave FC (0-1-0, 0 points) fell 2-1 to Kansas City Current (2-0-0, 6 points) 2-1 at Snapdragon Stadium on Saturday night. The Wave hosted 32,066 fans in the club's home opener, setting a new NWSL home opener attendance.
San Diego opened the scoring in the 18th minute when midfielder Sofia Jakobsson hit a close range shot that found the back of the net. However, Kansas City leveled the score in the 44th minute off a goal from Isabel Rodriguez.
The game-winning goal would be a penalty kick by Current captain Lo'eau LaBonta, who stepped up to the spot and buried it in the 70th minute. Despite outshooting Kansas City 19-14, including a 5-3 advantage in shots on target, and winning the possession battle (66-34), the Wave would be unable to find a late equalizer.

Notes:
San Diego set a new NWSL Home Opener record with 32,066 in attendance. The Wave had set the record last season with 30,854 in attendance in the club's home opener in 2023.
Midfielder Sofia Jakobsson's goal in the 18th minute marked her first of 2024 and her fourth NWSL goal.
Defender Hanna Lundkvist earned her first-ever NWSL regular season start.
Defender Kaitlyn Torpey earned her first-ever NWSL appearance when she was substituted in the 70th minute.
