San Diego Wave FC News Release
San Diego Wave FC dropped to Angel City FC 2-1 at BMO Stadium on Wednesday night in a 2023 UKG NWSL Challenge Cup match.
Two minutes into the match, Angel City's Madison Hammond found the end of a corner kick and took advantage of congestion inside the Wave box to take the lead for the home side. Los Angeles scored again in the 18th minute when Scarlett Camberos sent a pass to Clarisse LeBihan, who ran onto it and placed it in the lower right corner.
Midfielder Danielle Colaprico, a second-half substitute, cut the lead in half in the 63rd minute with a laser shot from the top of the box. Midfielder Jaedyn Shaw hit an out-swinging corner that was cleared to the top of the box and found the feet of Colaprico. The midfielder took a touch and struck the ball perfectly to the top corner to bring the night's final score to 2-1.
Next on the schedule: The San Diego Wave return to regular season play this Saturday, traveling to take on the Chicago Red Stars on July 1, at SeatGeek Stadium. The match is slated to kick off at 5:00 p.m. PT and will air on Paramount+.
Notes:
Forward Melanie Barcenas earned her first professional career start tonight becoming the youngest player in NWSL history to start a Challenge Cup game at 15 years and 242 days. The local Clairemont native made her debut on April 29, 2023, for the Wave and has appeared for the Wave a total of four games in her first professional season.
Midfielder Danielle Colaprico scored her first goal for the Wave since joining this offseason as a free agent.
Defender Cheyenne Shorts made her Wave FC debut for the club. Shorts was signed as an Injury Replacement Player on March 28 after previously being part of the Portland Thorns roster in 2022.
Kelsey Turnbow appeared in tonight's Starting XI, playing her first minutes since April 29 and her second start of the season after recovering from a back injury.
