SOCKERS HOST STARS IN HOME OPENER
The San Diego Sockers, fresh off a season-opening 10-6 victory in Stockton over the California Cougars, open their home schedule at the Del Mar Arena on Saturday night when they host the Tacoma Stars. This is the first meeting between the two teams in their current iterations. The Sockers and Stars enjoyed a long rivalry in the heyday of the MISL.
POMP AND CIRCUMSTANCE
The Sockers will hang their 11th championship banner on Saturday prior to the 6:15pm kickoff against the Tacoma Stars. In addition, the first 500 fans who arrive at the Del Mar Arena will receive a free T-shirt commemorating the Sockers' 11th major indoor title.
SUSI EARNS PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Sockers' veteran forward Aaron Susi was the first weekly recipient of Sockers' Player of the Week honors, as announced by the team on Tuesday. Susi scored two goals and added an assist as the Sockers held off California 10-6 in the season opener at Stockton Arena on November 14th. Susi was second on the Sockers last year with 16 goals and 12 assists in 12 games.
LAST TIME OUT: SOCKERS 10 COUGARS 6
The Sockers opened their 2010-2011 PASL-Pro championship campaign with an impressive 10-6 win over the California Cougars at Stockton Arena on Sunday, November 14th. Aaron Susi and Chiky Luna led the Sockers in scoring, each recording two goals and an assist. San Diego scored on their first two power-play opportunities and added a pair of short-handed goals in the third quarter to ice the win. Newcomers John Krause and Majell Aterado both scored goals in their Sockers debut.
OPPONENT'S PROFILE: Tacoma Stars
LAST YEAR: 6-1-1 (PASL-Premier Champs)
vs. SOCKERS: first meeting
Last Meeting: N/A
The Tacoma Stars are playing their first season in the PASL-Pro after graduating from the PASL-Premier division last season. With a 6-1-1 record, the Stars were the champions of the PASL-Premier after winning the Northwest Division title. With a rebuilt roster and the leadership of indoor great Greg Howes, the Stars are expected to be a primary rival for the PASL-Pro Western Division title in 2010-2011.
STAR: Greg Howes, forward, player/coach
A legend of the indoor game for the past decade, Howes has returned to try and lift another team to the top of the mountain. A three-time MVP of the MISL from 2004-2006, Howes also helped the Seattle Sounders outdoor football club to the 2007 USL-1 championship. Howes may be the most talented and experienced player the Sockers face all season. He scored a pair of goals in the Stars' season opening 8-6 win over Kitsap.
WATCH OUT FOR: Todd Stauber, midfielder
A college standout, Todd Stauber made his Stars PASL-Pro debut a memorable one with a pair of goals, as Tacoma defeated PASL-Frontier rival Kitsap by a 8-6 count at the Tacoma Soccer Center. Stauber scored the first goal of the Stars' season and later helped them hold off Kitsap after a 3-3 halftime score. A member of an NCAA championship team at Seattle Pacific, Stauber will be a tough opponent for the Sockers' midfield to counter.
