SOCKERS CONTINUE MISSOURI ROAD TRIP
The San Diego Sockers (6-2) take on the St. Louis Ambush (2-5) this afternoon as the Sockers complete a weekend road trip through Kansas City and St. Louis. This is the first-ever meeting between the Sockers and Ambush. Both teams had to travel following losses on Saturday night; the Sockers dropping a 10-7 decision to the Missouri Comets while the Ambush fell 5-4 in Chicago against the Mustangs.
LAST GAME: MISSOURI 10, SOCKERS 7
One of the most highly anticipated games in the 2014-15 MASL regular season lived up to the hype as the Sockers and Missouri Comets played a high-level contest in front of 4,218 fans at the Independence Events Center. The Sockers trailed 3-2 after one quarter and 5-4 at halftime before taking a 6-5 lead in the third period. Leo Gibson's second goal of the night snapped a 6-6 tie in the third quarter and the Comets used a run of four straight goals to post the 10-7 win. Both teams' captains netted a hat trick, with Vahid Assadpour adding two assists to his trick for Missouri. Kraig Chiles scored his 16th, 17th and 18th goals of the season and Ney added two goals and an assist in the losing effort.
NEY WON'T PLAY TODAY
The dynamic debut of Brazilian midfielder Mardney Almeida "Ney" Felix continued on Saturday as Ney scored a pair of goals with an assist, moving his two-game totals to five goals and three assists. Unfortunately for Ney and the Sockers, the Brazilian's night ended midway through the fourth quarter in Missouri as Ney suffered a hard tackle and a sprained right ankle. The injury was ruled to not be a break and Ney was able to leave the Independence Events Center in a walking boot. He will not play in today's game against the Ambush but hopes to be back in 2-3 weeks or less.
CHILES FINDS THE SCORING TOUCH AGAIN
Already the all-time goals and points leader in the Sockers' former league (the PASL), Kraig Chiles has surged up the list of MASL scoring leaders with nine goals in his past two games. After netting six goals with an assist in a 17-10 win over Seattle two weekends back, Chiles fired in a hat trick in Saturday night's 10-7 loss to Missouri. On the season Chiles' 18 goals lead the Sockers and rank fifth in the MASL, while his 23 points are tied for ninth-best in the league. Earlier in the week Chiles was honored as a San Diego Hall of Champions Star of the Year for 2014.
PERERA LEADS SOCKERS IN SCORING
Sockers forward Nick Perera has been a dynamic performer all season as San Diego's target forward, and his 27 points in eight games ranks fifth in the MASL. With a goal and assist in Saturday's loss to Missouri, Perera now has 12 goals and 15 assists on the season. His assists count ranks third in the league, trailing only Turlock's Enrique Tovar (22) and Missouri's Leo Gibson (19).
FARBER PLACED ON INJURED LIST
All-league midfielder Brian Farber will be sorely missed on the pitch tonight, as San Diego will be without their speediest midfielder and one of the game's fiercest competitors. Farber was placed on the Sockers' injury list retroactive to December 6th with a knee injury. Brian aggravated his knee against the Las Vegas Legends on November 23rd and has been unable to play since.
HAGERTY, MERC IN THE LINEUP
The Sockers will make two lineup changes for today's game. Midfielder Chad Hagerty and defender Mike Mercuriali will be selected in place of Ney and Gustavo Machado "Guto" Quieroga.
