San Diego Gulls News Release

SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego Gulls scored three unanswered goals in the third period to climb over the Colorado Gold Kings, 4-2, Friday night, before 6,870 at the San Diego Sports Arena.

Teams traded goals in the first period. Colorado (35-21-6) grabbed a 1-0 lead 12 minutes into the opening frame on R.J. Enga's team-leading 43rd goal of the season. Assists were credited to Craig Lyons and Zac Boyer. The Gulls (40-19-3) tied the contest late in the period. Taj Melson skated in and back-handed a shot off Colorado goaltender Kirk Daubenspeck at 18:12 - his eighth of the season. Dennis Purdie and Trevor Sherban assisted on the power-play goal.

The Gold Kings regained the lead with a short-handed goal at the 6:44 mark of the second period. Gulls netminder Trevor Koenig made an errant pass that went right on the tape of Colorado's Greg Schmidt, who easily put home his 12th goal. The blue and orange had several chances to tie the game but Daubenspeck's stellar goaltending foiled the attack. Through two periods San Diego outshot Colorado 33-12.

The Gulls were finally able to a put a dent in Daubenspeck and the Gold Kings in the third period. Woolf got things started with a power-play goal at 5:14 off passes from Purdie and John Spoltore. The goal was Woolf's league-leading 46th of the season. Less than three minutes later, Dan Gravelle gave San Diego the lead with his 16th goal. Melson and Petr Marek were given the assists. Joe Bianchi capped it off with his sixth goal at 17:48, with assists going to Martin St. Amour and Jamie Black. The Gulls finished the game outshooting the Gold Kings 50-19.

Notes: Spoltore extended his point-scoring streak to seven games. He continues to lead the league with 90 points and 66 assists. Spoltore needs 10 more helpers in San Diego's final 10 games to break the franchise's all-time record for one season. Woolf also continues to put up solid numbers as his point-scoring streak jumps to six games. He remains two points behind Spoltore and leads the WCHL with 46 goals. The blue and orange are now 11-14-2 against teams over .500 this season. Tony Iob was signed today, but was placed on injured reserve. Rookie defenseman Stefan Katalina was traded to the Bakersfield Condors for future considerations.

San Diego continues its weekend set against the Gold Kings Saturday at 7 p.m. St. Patrick's Day beanie Gulls, presented by San Diego Sports Medicine, will be given to the first 5,000 fans.
